Celebration Advice

Alright, so not to count my chickens before they're hatched...but it looks like come the first of January I will hopefully have a new job that will look very good on my resume for future graduate school applications and just generally help my career out BIG time. So I'm excited, I've been looking for an opportunity like this for a long time and now I just found out that one of my friends (he's a professor) just got a promotion to a Director level position, effective today, and will be needing to hire some people to do research. He said that hiring me is one of the first things he wants to do. So nothing is set in stone and I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high but it sounds very promising.

Secondarily, (yes this matters less to me than the experience and having this job on my resume) it sounds like this job will likely double my income.

So that brings me to my question....

I need some ideas for celebrating with my wife if this all goes according to plan. When I mentioned it to her she said "well we could go out to dinner and then go watch a movie" (we are very poor graduate students so we never even get to do those things). I said that I thought we should do something a little more than that. Her next response "Ok, how about a vacation to Florida?" I said that was going a little too far.

So we need ideas of fun things that lie somewhere on the continuum between dinner and a movie, and a vacation to FL.

A motorcycle for her is out of the question for awhile yet and me getting myself gear/mods/trackdays/etc, won't be much of a celebration for her.

We're still newlyweds so the whole sex thing is a given.

Alright, let 'er rip!

Drive to Niagra Falls. Its beatiful when there is snow on the ground! Hotels arent cheap, about 2-3 bills a night but its worth it. Its probably only a 4 hour drive from you, maybe a little more.

This sounds like a good idea to me. I'm not very creative when it comes to this sort of stuff, but the best thing is to think of something she LOVES to do, and surprise her with that.

Throw a nudist swingers party. That always wins a few extra points with the ladies.

Thanks GR and Capt! Good ideas/points, I'll keep that in mind as I try to make my decision. You'll get extra reps for giving me substantive posts in this thread! That goes for anyone else that gives good ideas too (Note: I will be the person to decide what is a good idea).

Marko, if you drive all the way here to hang with me and GM then I'll buy you a steak for sure!

I'm thinking of buying a dog for us if I get that job, since we are allowed to have one at our current rental house and we'll by buying a house if the job does come through and both places will have yards so...yeah.

Any thoughts?

I know Pippi does rescue but I think my wife and I would like a puppy so that its "ours" from the beginning and comes without any weird phobias of brooms or aerosol cans from some a-hole abusive previous owner.

Definitely a road trip is in order. We have 2 touristy towns nearby (1 or 2 hours away) where you will find shopping, shows, and attractions. (Eureka Springs, AR and Branson, MO for you locals.)

Best of luck on that. I hope it pans out for you!

well, just be sure you have the time to devote to a new puppy. they are alot of work. it might be stressful with a new job and all. as long as you have that covered, i say go for it.

That's weird, I am doing that new years eve weekend. We are going to the same ski resort where we met 5 years ago.

Big house party, lots of beer, Ill bring the strippers and post your addy here for all the Michigan folks that have nothing better to do. I know its a great celebration when you end up puking on a poodle.... Dont know how it works out, I just know it does!

now if your looking for a serious answer...

your facing a bummer of a time of year here. Its going to be rainy/cold/slushey for the next few months. I say go some place that is not weather dependent. Take here out to the theater, Im not talking movies, but like a play or a musical or something like that, then a fancy shmansy dinner. or Vegas... either one.
