emergency kits

Howdy guys, are there any good emergency kits out there that will temporarily take care of touring-related issues? flats, for example? Is any one of them better than any other?

well my emergancy kit doubles as a cell phone, so i really cant help you. as far as flats go, there are sealants that go in the tire, but from what i've heard they end up costing you more time and $ in the long run.

talk to ebbs

I know they sell a temporary plug and a C02 cartridge for flats at Wal-Mart. That sounds crazy " Wal-Mart" but my local Walmart sells battery tenders, oil, oil filters, glasses, bell full face helmets, and alot more motorcycle accessories. Other that that maybe a flare but space is limited. I wouldn't buy a helmet from there but a plug kit I would.

Remember a plug is only temporary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha - yeah that's my SV. I know that pic is kinda big... lol... i didn't realize how obnoxiously huge it is.

Anyway, reason i ask is I was doing a 2000-mile round trip from college Station, TX to Atlanta, GA last year and, of course, drove over a nail or something in alabama. my rear tire went flat in about 2 seconds - o walked it over to a tire repair place and the patch they put in it got me about 1000 miles until i could get a new tire put on. Thank god i found a repair place, or else i would have been sad out of luck.

I dont really have any space to carry an actual KIT with me, but I always make sure to have my mobile phone on me, I make sure to carry with me at all times, my licence (yeah important for more than 1 reason), Social Security Card, my Green Card (Since I still have a few years to go until I become a citizen yet), and People should carry a card listing: Physicians, Medical Conditions, Medications currently taking and an allergy card....They dont know if you are unconscious!

definately - a cell phone is a must! I usually bring a tank bag along with me, so space isn't asbig of an issue, i just want to really avoid getting caught in a crappy situation like that - I've got about 2 weeks untill i get to drive from Texas to Minnesota

flats are scary... especially when you're in the middle of nowhere. Everything else is easy, but not being able to drive just sucks

If you're doing any kind of long distance riding, the Aerostitch catalogue is your friend. Seriously, order the catalogue, and you'll be amazed at how many things have you saying to yourself, "that's so cool!! I need one of those!"

http://www.aerostitch.com

That said, on their site, there's an area for "Off and riding..." from there, go to "prevent or repair," and from there, click on "tire."

http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/Tire-p-1-c-266.html

Another good section to peruse is the "off the road again" area, where you'll find nifty little first aid kits of various sizes and complexity (including "touring," "sport riding" and "commuting".)

Hey DJNytblaste, i just realized you're located in Des Moines - I'm staying there for 3 or 4 days on the way to Minnesota. I actually grew up there! Any good places to ride around Des Moines?

i was riding on my tires today, which (if you dont allrady know from all my bitching) are well past due for a change up. I was riding into a gas station, ran over what i thought was a rock, and it made a super loud POP. I thought for sure my tire blew out, but i musta just run over something that either broke or i heard something else behind me.

either way i almost pooped my pants.

Haha - I had something like that happen too. I stopped by a Jack in the Box for a sandwich and when i came back out to my bike I noticed a HUGE rusted nail sticking out of the back tire. I was about 15 miles away from my local repair shop, so i jumped on it and SUPER SLOWLY made it back - this is highway travel, of course. The entire way i was in a cold sweat... no joke.. expecting the tire to go any minute. Plus, this was a week-old Pilot Power tire, so i wasn't exactly a happy camper. We yanked the nail and turn out it didn't penetrate deep enough to hit the air... whew!

Oh crap! When are you coming into town? Yeah there are some GREAT places to ride around here! The main one is "the Loop" downtown. If you are coming into town soon, I cant actually ride rite now due to an injured knee, but I can ride back to show ya around PM me!

For riding around meeting up with people it is..plus there are a few really good parking lots down there. I say downtown due to all the parking lots that you can jump around to if the cops are out..plus a lot of places to ride down alleyways and such also down there. I know of a few good other places too, but I'd have to be with to show.

my idea of good places to ride are places with NOBODY around... im something of a loner. i dont have a group i ride with. i dont meet up with people and hang out at the gas station or parking lot with my bike. about the most social thing i do on my bike is wave.

Havent met anybody cool to ride with in these parts.

I'm sorry to hear that man! If I lived a little closer if you'd ever wanna go out for a ride, i'd say look me up! I can be that way at times. I will just go on my bike south of here and go on some of the backroads and have them all to myself..great way to think

lol, i dont mind at all. when i do wanna road trip i go w/ my dads friend. hes a real out there guy, but a hell of a rider. better than me by far. He gets his 92 zx11r (with full givi saddle bags) around twisties faster than i can... im always playin catchup.

I like goin w/ him cause we stop and take goofy picks and can enjoy the ride. I posted a slideshow about a month ago that still makes me crack up when i look at the pics.

There are ohio people around here, but they are in whole other parts of the state. bummer.
