Military puts Myspace and Youtube OFF limits

Attn: Troops - Military puts MySpace, You Tube Off Limits!
Body: Military puts MySpace, other sites off limits

DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- Soldiers serving overseas will lose some of their online links to friends and loved ones back home under a Department of Defense policy that a high-ranking Army official said would take effect Monday.

The Defense Department will begin blocking access "worldwide" to YouTube, MySpace and 11 other popular Web sites on its computers and networks, according to a memo sent Friday by Gen. B.B. Bell, the U.S. Forces Korea commander.

The policy is being implemented to protect information and reduce drag on the department's networks, according to Bell.

"This recreational traffic impacts our official DoD network and bandwidth ability, while posing a significant operational security challenge," the memo said.

The armed services have long barred members of the military from sharing information that could jeopardize their missions or safety, whether electronically or by other means.

The new policy is different because it creates a blanket ban on several sites used by military personnel to exchange messages, pictures, video and audio with family and friends.

Members of the military can still access the sites on their own computers and networks, but Defense Department computers and networks are the only ones available to many soldiers and sailors in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Iraqi insurgents or their supporters have been posting videos on YouTube at least since last fall. The Army recently began posting videos on YouTube showing soldiers defeating insurgents and befriending Iraqis.

But the new rules mean many military personnel won't be able to watch those achievements -- at least not on military computers.

If the restrictions are intended to prevent soldiers from giving or receiving bad news, they could also prevent them from providing positive reports from the field, said Noah Shachtman, who runs a national security blog for Wired magazine.

"This is as much an information war as it is bombs and bullets," he said. "And they are muzzling their best voices."

The sites covered by the ban are the video-sharing sites YouTube, Metacafe, IFilm, StupidVideos, and FileCabi, the social networking sites MySpace, BlackPlanet and Hi5, music sites Pandora, MTV, and 1.fm, and live365, and the photo-sharing site Photobucket.

Several companies have instituted similar bans, saying recreational sites drain productivity.

That is sweet to know! I'm just worried about how i'm gonna keep in touch now though with some of my friends over in Iraq that only have access to military computers and none of there own. I hope they are smart enough to use a friends to gain myspace access to talk to me and let me know they are ok.

I feel a little bit of releaf (SP) knowing that. I dont know how Iraq is set up at all (obviously) but that really makes me feel better knowing that. And I take it that during "off times" you can go and use the computers and stuff there.

I'm happy to know that you made it home safe and in one piece!

!!! I sure hope that they are..main one i'm worried bout is my uncle who is in the CIA and trains black ops. He has been gone since 9/11 (yes that long ago) and I havent heard from him since. But, in this case, no news is good news..so I keep my fingers crossed everyone will come home soon so my family can be reunited again.

True but you can't use Yahoo IM on military computers. The only instant messager you can use on a military computer is AKO. Hopefully they won't put that ban on the computers in the internet cafe, if so that will really suck!

They had all that stuff blocked at work. I complained that I needed to get on some of those sites to be able to do my job.
The owner ok'd it, and I can now go to any site that does not contain porn.

And what's wrong with Nascar?

I'm all about the beer and the wrecks... and drunk redneck girls walking around topless.

myspace has been blocked for me for a year or more, and you can use google's IM on the marine network. even though all those sites are blocked its no big deal, just use a proxy and you can go to almost any site you want.

Have fun at your Indy race. I am going to the one here on our new track.

You can still use regular e-mail to communicate. Unless they changed that rule since I was in, too. Granted, you still have to watch what you type since it's all monitored, but hell, even when they could use myspace, etc., that stuff was monitored.

Hit me up. I live just north of Indy in the suburbs. If you're in town long enough, we'll hit up a bar for some drinks. If it's just you, I've got a couch you can sleep on if ya need it.

When you're in your room, it's your own internet service.
