I've talked to more than my fair share of these people... I have given out my personal info, to the point of my home phone number, address, and even directions to my house from off the highway. Unfortunately nobody has used that information.

99% of these people aren't as crazy as they appear... There is actually a number of them who are professional 'baiters'... They get themselves on as many call lists as possible, then attempt to bait telemarketers into violating any number of state and federal laws while being recorded. Once they catch someone they try to sue them for harrassment... I heard of one guy who tried to do that with our company... He sent tons of documents and whatnot, including the recorded conversation to our home office offering to settle out of court for $5k or something... We spent 3x that amount fighting it and won.

Personally the best call I've had like that was a customer who claimed to be on the DNC list (which we can still call you if we, or the company we are calling on behalf of, has an existing business relationship up to 18mos prior)... The federal fine for violating the national DNC list is $11k... This guy was freaking out telling me that he could make this all go away if I would send him a check for $11k... I responded by telling him that's not the way things work, which of course made him even more irate... From there he continued flaming a nut, "so you're telling me that if you steal my car and the cops catch you in it, that nothing will happen to you and the cops will just give me my car back." Holding back the tears of laughter I simply stated, "sir, I am not the smartest person in the world, but I am very sure that your analogy does not make any sense in this situation." Finally I just wore him out and he hung up...

Although I will say this, the best is when they say, "how would you like it if I called you at dinner time?" Don't bother, I'll be here at work... I'll call you...

Actually it's quite fun... I run the call center so I don't have to deal with the customers very often, just when they are irate... And it's actually pretty rare that you get someone quite this insane... Generally once the call gets escalated to me, they have heard the same thing from the rep, another manager, and then I am the final step... They either threaten a lawsuit at that point or calm down REAL quick when I get on the phone... It's funny, they don't believe anything the rep tells them, usually disregard what another manager will tell them, but once they get to me they start buying it... I guess it just takes them that long to realize that we know and train our reps the legal side of the biz... Although there are still folks like this lady... I've had people claim they are lawyers and whatnot trying to inform me of the laws... That's just fun...
