i just followed parts of the route i took last time i was at new york. its amazing.

I just got on google earth and looked at the gap. Its funny, all around it there are pretty blurry pictures but at the gap there are super high quality ones.

The satellite photos are only used in the overhead shots. The resolution of those images changes based on population density or salient features, i.e. the cities and landmarks are high-res and you can zoom way in, middle of nowhere won't zoom as far.

For this new feature though it appears they have used a photo van and driven all of the routes in a given area. Must have taken a chitload of time... those google folks are geniuses, though. Really.
