Keystroke logging is NOT wiretapping

So the po-po don't need a warrant. Pulled this from a geek site:
"A federal judge in Los Angeles has dismissed wiretapping charges against a California man who used a hardware keystroke logger to spy on his employer, SecurityFocus is reporting. The court ruled that the device doesn't violate the federal Wiretap Act because it only intercepted signals off a keyboard cable, not an interstate network. The government is asking for reconsideration. Ironically, the judge relied in part on the Scarfo precedent, which allowed the FBI to use such a keylogger without a wiretap warrant."

Thought it was kinda interesting. For those who don't know, a keystroke logger makes a note of every keystroke you make on a keyboard and either transmits them to some log somewhere on the Internet, or just keeps a local log. Great way to steal passwords and identity information, which is why using public terminals is a bad idea when doing any account checking or financial transactions. It does circumvent all security controls, like SSL over HTTP (aka https://) and VPN connections.

Just spreadin' the paranoia

and the fact that the average user would have absolutely no clue that one of these was installed is scary enough as it is. and anybody can get their mits on this software too.

if you ask me, there should have to be a disclaimed when you are hired, that these may be in use for company security, this & that, whatever. of course if they did, they'd probably never get anybody hired either.

there was a scam at one of our local malls a couple years back..a company came in over the holiday and set up 10 computers, in the mall..all networked together...basically for advertising..they all had internet access, and were there just for the convenience of shoppers to check their emails, and also to be able tocheck ur banking, etc..pretty slick the way they marketed it....and after a a month or so, they were yanked without notice, and here the company had keyloggers on all the machines... yeah, that was a lawsiut and a half im sure..

Yea, I wrote a sweet program 2 years ago for a hospital I was working for to keep records of ALL typing done on the doctors computers. It is really slick program. It got alot of Doc's canned or sued. I also have tons of other stuff I make for the sole purpose of FUN... and to get back at people that piss me off.

Good example. Most organizations this intelligent also hide how they know by connecting other more obvious events to fire folks. That way nobody knows that spying is going on.

The easiest way to know is to know an IT guy. Any IT guy should be able to tell you how busy they really are, which is often a good indicator of the likelihood that monitoring is going on. After all, it takes time to read ALL the data a person types in each day.

It's not. I can create an email and If you use outlook, I would get a copy of everything you will type from now on. Account numbers, SSN, passwords, anything I want. But I'm wont, I use to. I spent alot of my nights in college doing questionable things.

Hell, anybody can buy one. Just go to http://www.spectersoft.com/ and you can purchase e-blaster. It works, and it's undetectable by most scanning programs. I know, because I've used it. Oh, and even if a company doesn't have you sign something when you are hired, they can easily get around that by putting a quick message up when you log in to the computer. Something like, "This computer is property of x company and use is subject to monitoring. All persons agree to being monitored by use of this computer." That's it, you've just given them permission to monitor you.

not yet..heh heh. really, it all comes down to, if somebody wants ur information bad enuff, it doesnt matter how many firewalls, routers, or encryptions you have to make you think ur safe. If somebody designed it, somebody can crack it. Not trying to make anyone paranoid by any stretch, its just something that is par for the course. Really though, you're big time hackers arent really interested in john doe's porn movies on his comp. they've more important people to hack.

Note to self..never accept any emails from twisty!!
