here is a question for you guys who's had much more experiences with message boards. what is the weirdest personal attacks or amazingly abbrasive type incidents you ever had to deal with?

someone on a local forum made fun of my lower-case typing. i'm not sure why.

Lowercase typing and a complete disregard for grammar is annoying to read. So, that's probably why.

I've seen attacks for all kinds of things, but message boards aren't that bad. When someone's on with the sole purpose to start ****, they want you to get worked up. Don't feed the trolls and they go away.

The worst deal I had to deal with was a hacker about 6 years ago. That wasn't through boards, that's when I used to play games online a lot and certain ports are always vulerable, etc.

I've seen mailed (snail mail) threats to a moderator friend at another site.

it doesnt take much on some boards for people to start being stupid, and not jokin about it.

everything from poor grammar & spelling..to being a keyboard tuff guy at every little thing that pisses someone off.

Fortunately, the flaming here does not get out of hand where someone gets hurt. H3ll, there's no one here who knows me well enough to hurt my feelings. I figure I can sling an insult as good as anyone without being malicious or a complete drunken ass. I have found his site to be a rare exception where the people and the threads stay in control and that is probably why I have a seat at the end of the bar

It's no coincidence, at least I'd like to believe that. Part of our charter when we started this site was to maintain a civil board where opinions can be expressed but attacking is not okay.

We have had great success in recruiting a core group that adheres to those standards without reminders. It really sets the tone for the rest of the site. When newbies visit, they first see how others respond and react. Many times, their behavior is modeled after what is considered "acceptable".

That, and the fact that you'll shoot their azz if they don't.

The worst I've seen is identity theft ocurring right before me. And it was an Administrator. Someday when I'm done with that saga, I'll post the full details. Suffice it to say, I highly recommend different passwords for everywhere you go. Annoying, yes, but always a good idea and there are tools (my current favorite) to help you recall them all EASILY.

As has been noted, trolls feed from getting attention, so the objective, of course, is to ignore them. Sometimes they go away, but more often than not the staff get tired of their antics and they get perma-banned. Ironically, the incident today that spawned the parent of this thread was followed up with a PM from a fellow veteran member of the board telling me the mods and Admins have been considering what to do with the kid's account. As pig's noted, you can almost always smell them a mile away.

As for spelling, grammar, capitalization, and the like, the only thing that bugs me is ALL CAPITAL LETTER USERS. That's the online equivalent of shouting, and is not just frowned upon but a bannable offense in many places. If you don't write easy to read notes, it can reflect on your intellect and often can be ignored because its too difficult to disseminate what the hell was just written. So while it does take time to type out something "properly", it advances people's opinion of you subconsciously.

PS: Don't mind pig, he's just a Spelling Nazi

Hmmm it's funny that this came up. Here is the most horrible attack someone has EVER done to me. It was about a year ago, but I saved the email. (Matt, I think you read this before.) It's kinda graphic...So be warned.

Yeah it really scared me for a while. A couple friends wouldn't let me walk out to a parking lot by myself or go anywhere by myself for a couple months. It was really bad. ANd you KNOW me, Matt. I don't do ANYTHING to anyone to piss them off.
