Gettin' the shaft

Man Dies In Elevator Shaft On Way To Vacation

POSTED: 9:59 am EST November 29, 2004

NEW YORK -- A retired teacher about to leave for a Caribbean vacation has died trying to get out of a stalled freight elevator.

It happened Sunday, when the 76-year-old and his wife were on their way out of their New York City apartment building with their luggage.

Police say the elevator stalled between the 14th and 15th floors. The man tried to step out onto the 14th floor, but he slipped into the shaft instead.

A city spokesman says the man had been warned not to use the freight elevator without supervision. She says the elevator stalled because a safety gate wasn't closed properly.
Poor guy.

Another example of people who cannot/will not follow directions. Of course that supervision requirement to use the elevator applied to someone else. Now a family has lost its father, and there are people mourning the loss of their friend in a needless tragedy, because someone tried to operate a machine they did not know how to use. Kinda like those squids who want to start out on an R-1 for their first bike. You can't protect people from themselves.

That's sad. A guy makes it through all that in his life, gets ready for a big trip, and "BAM", down the shaft he goes.

That really sucks! Just wished he would have heeded their warning.
