360 woes...

Ok, so I'm playing Moto GP, and all of a sudden, my Xbox 360 locks up.
turn off, restart, red light number 2 comes on... overheating... ok.
I have the cooling fans, so I unplug everything, let it sit for a minuite. plug it all back in, try again.
Start up, almost to the game... Red lights 2, 3, and 4... the ring of death.
Hardware malfunction.
So again, unplug everything, remove hard drive, wait... put HD back on, plug in, restart... get to playing the game, and locks solid...
Ok, so prob with the HD...
Unplug everything again... Remove HD... AGAIN...
Leaving the HD off, plug in, say F it, i'll just play to play, no saving...
Get just started in the game, and it locks again... 3 red lights again...

Soooo... to all you gamers/hackers out there... is there anything I can to to salvage this console??

I know I should be riding instead of playing video games, maybe it's a sign... but it was dreary and cold out... so i figured a night at home w/the S.O. would be good, sit around, drink and play video games, cool night... and then THIS... grrrrr....

TIA for any help given

Unfortunately my hacking of 360's is extremely limited...

1st gen system I assume? Those things are a nightmare... The first thing I'd do is used compressed air to blow it out... You'd be amazed at how much crap comes out...

Is it under warranty? If not, hack it apart and really blow it out good... Some tips on hacking it apart:

The gray pieces on top and bottom of the case are real easy to fluck up when pulling apart. Stick something in the holes on the side of the case to release the clips on these peices... You can tell where they are from looking at the top.

When you push the clips in on the back of the machine, use a super small screwdriver... push hard... it will sound like you are breaking it, but it's ok, they are just some stiff clips... Use something to keep the side apart when you go for the other end...

From there... Check HERE.

Microsoft extended the 360's warranty to 3 years, so you are covered. Just visit the 360 website for information on how to send yours in. They'll take care of it, and probably give you one of the consoles with the fixed/upgraded cooling systems.

Good luck.

Call Microsoft, they will fix it. Sounds like one of the glitchy first 360s.

Don't have any help to give you. But....

I am thinking of buying an X-Box 360. They just came out with Moto GP 07. I played the demo and it is sweet to say the least Just came out a couple of days ago.

What do you think of your X-Box? Should I get the Playstation 3 instead?

Good luck with the issues you are having with your console.

My game system never overheats or locks up. My joystick broke once, but that was from too much porn.

Those cooling fans that run inline with the power cable have been known to cause problems, since they add unnecessary load to the power supply. Stay away from them, and put your console in a well ventilated area (not some cabinet in an entertainment center).

This cooling fan plugs into the USB port on back of the xbox, is this what you are refering to as being not good??

I like my xbox 360 (up to this point at least) But then I have no real experience with the PS3 either. I have a PS2, still play it too. The graphics are better on the xbox than ps2... and I like the wireless controllers too. Never played online, but I just got it back in March, and summer is for riding, not playing video games.

Mine did the same thing this weekend. I asumed it was my son, but turns out it's the problem everyone is having with the gen. 1's. Xbox will send you a box to put it in and I think they said you'll get it back in 5-6 weeks. I couln't wait that long and had the replacement warranty from sears, so I just tokk it back there. Down side is they wouldn't swap hard drives with me, so I have to start over on everything

That was what I would do, but I sent the wife to do the swap, and she is and can't do that.

In XBox 360's magazine they put out monthly they talk about the Ring Of Death in the current issue. (top left, bottom left and bottom right light up) Send it back and they will fix it for free. They also made the warrenty for 3 years now. They talk about it being a possible design flaw in the case itself. Not enough breathing room inside the case to keep things cool. When is the next version supposed to come out???
