motorcycle marketing

Any idea why the motorcycle companies are not promoting riding a motorcycle as an environmental benefit and traffic reducer?

I LOVE harley's saying on one of their ads, "the harley lane is always open".

it would be nice if more manufacturers would start running TV ads besides honda's free yourself ones and Kawasaki's made for the racetrack or whatever and Suzuki's hot babe and Vitara commercials. it doesnt really show the benefits of a bike besides beign "free", looking hot and sexy, and going fast.

what about reduced greenhouse gas emissions, a more eco-friendly lifestyle, less traffic, less money spent on gas, etc.

i can make a bike payment with the money saved on gas vs driving my Jeep.

It's a good question, though I'd wager to say it's because people don't buy motorcycles to save the environment (I mean if that was our big concern, we'd downgrade to a Vespa or something )....

But it is a valid question.

they are... but the u.s. market is not interested in environmentally friendly vehicles. it's all about image and podium finishes. according to u.s. insurance companies, motorcycles are considered luxury vehicles.

rain, snow, noise, and high insurance will keep the sale of new motorcycles lower than cars.

Plus we are interested in bad arse BIG horse power machines. Yes they are more efficient, but if you started throwing "Going Green" in these high performance. Or Muscle harley it would seem whimpy. And loose its cool factor.

The gas mileage is more just a bonus for me than anything. Too bad 95% of my riding is pointless other than fun.

Also, many cruisers and liter bikes are not getting that much better milage than an "economical" car.. getting 30 mpg in a 4 dr car, vs getting 35 on a bike, many people will still opt for the utility and "safety" of a car.

I think the point is to entice a different type of buyer... Note the talk is about motorcycles, not just sportbikes...

Yeah... they need to start marketing the chit out of smaller displacement bikes... that's I guess what this thread is getting at. And I agree.

Cause marketing is rarely about facts but image and bike companies probably don't want their product associated with the "green" image when they're used to associating with the power/freedom/excitement image. At least not in the US.
