[RANT] If your lease says NO PETS...
Do people think that landlords are stupid? Do they think they won't get caught? Sure, some MIGHT get away with violating their lease by having pets, but in this small of a complex, their chances are pretty slim. I manage 84 apartments and I live in the complex. I can't even begin to tell you how many people have been evicted for having pets. I even explain it to them when they sign the lease, just in case they skimmed through that part. Our lease says no pets at all, not even for a couple days while your grandma goes out of town. None. Yet people try anyway. Many get caught because neighbors report it. Others get caught because the animal is seen through a window or, if it's a dog, is heard barking.
This particular girl, that has put me on a rant, had lived in the apartment for a year and I'm not positive exactly how long she'd had the cats. If she had them for the full year, then she took them somewhere else when she'd call for maintenance, but I never noticed ANY problems in the apartment when I was in there so I honestly don't think she's had them the full time. However, she's moving out in a week and, per our lease, we are allowed to show the apartment for up to 30 days prior to the tenants vacate date. Well, I went in to show the apartment today and was greeted by two cats and a lovely piss and **** odor. Great, so now the carpet has to be replaced. I just hope to hell I can get the money out of her for it. I am NOT happy.
People, PLEASE, have some respect for your landlord and the tenants who will live in the apartment after you move. The lease says no pets for a reason. Just because you enjoy your pets and their odor, that doesn't mean the person moving in after you can handle the odor, hair, etc. Even when a place has been cleaned, the piss is still in the carpet and pad; it doesn't go away until the pad and carpet have been replaced. If a place doesn't permit pets, then don't live there. It's that simple. There is no reason for sneaking animals into a place, so don't do it. I guess this is just one more aspect of our society where people don't give a damn about anything except themselves, huh?
