Squid Sighted

Okay Peeps,

I'm driving home from work and I look to my left and guess what I see !!!! Some dude on a GSXR 1000 with a tank top, no gloves, sweat pants, and sneakers going down I-66. I look at this fool in disbelief because I can't understand why this idiot is riding on a interstate with going at least 75mph without the proper gear. I'm sorry, but as a Vet a good soldier, or Airman in my case, never goes into battle without his helmet and protective gear. I really wish the gov't would crack down on this sort of thing, it could help drive our insurance rates down.

Danger... good thread!

The SQUID population has GREATLY increased. Almost every biker I see... at least 3 out of 4... is wearing jeans, maybe gloves, and a t-shirt or sleeveless shirt!!!

Seen 2 last night and I want to get out of my truck and ask them are you doing!! If I would have been on my bike I would have done it!

Then you see these guys on thier bikes wearing a sweatshirt, LIKE THAT IS GOING TO DO ANYTHING!

Do you think it would be possible to get the gov't to enact a law requiring riders to wear protective gear? I was wondering if we could get all these squids in compliance, would people stop looking down on those that ride. Who knows, it could lower our insurance rates as well.

No! to the feds regulating any kind of gear, you would never get compliance, and as far as insurance goes, there are seatbelt laws, but does your car insurance go down?? Have you ever seen your insurance go down except when you live down a major violation like DUI or suspension, Ect??

What we don't need are more nazi regulations. What we do need is stricter licensing and more education

People fight the helmet laws, why would they think they should have to wear any other type of protective gear?

Gas Man,

I know a lot of people who have been riding for a while that wear like blue jeans when they go riding. They say that they have two reasons for this.

Their first is because if they are not like racing, or doing what Twisty was doing in one of the WOS videos (13min one), they feel there is no need to wear full leathers. They say it would look kinda ridiculous to see a guy in full leathers walking through like the mall cause they stopped their for something to eat on their way to wherever they were going.

And some people tell me that they might not offer as much protection as wearing full leathers, however it offers you significantly more protection than like what I saw the other day. A guy going down Powers Blvd (6 lane highway) on a GSXR-750, doing a wheelie with shorts, tank top, no lid, no gloves and flip flops.

I mean, at least if you wreck in jeans, it'll offer you some sort of protection than flesh vs. road in the above forementioned condition, right? or wrong?

OMG, here's another squid. This one wants to mod his shifter lever so that he can wear dress shoes to work because he doesn't like being seen in sneakers or some other clumsy shoe.

Well, if you go down at a low speed, then your jeans will offer some protection. Personally, I don't care one bit about what someone thinks of me. I'm not dressed in leathers to look cool while riding. I'm dressed in leathers to protect my skin and body if I should go down. Since you commented about being worried aobut the looks people give you, let me ask you this: Would you rather be seen in leathers and have people give you weird looks for a few days out of your life or would you rather not wear your gear and have people avoid looking at you for the rest of your life because they don't want to look at road rash.

No, the last thing we need is the GOV involved with riding. In a way choosing how much of a chance you take is one of the things that makes ride in such a thrill. It's the freedom we all love and injoy. Now I'm not saying its right though. I think those stupid should be dragged down the road by thier ankels.

Captain,

Would you consider that a SQUID or a plain olde moron? I mean, he should've gotten a cruiser if he wants to do some stuff like that.

Captain,

I'm not saying that I wouldn't wear full leathers. I just don't have the cash right now to spend on them. I asked people riding with full leathers vs. like jeans and leather jacket. That was their answer. I personally don't care. You're talking to the guy who is painting his car purple with black interior! And besides, I've been getting made fun of since I was 18months old cause of the thick glasses I have to wear to see so it doesn't bother me one bit if I have some schmuck makin' fun of me.

Heh. I went to the movie theater last week to see Sin City on my bike. Walked in wearing both my jacket and riding pants, carrying my helmet and gloves. I would rather be considered a dork/weird/whatever for walking around in my gear than looking like Mr Potatohead hit a barbed wire fence should I wreck on the bike.

I don't know about some of the warmer climates, but around here in Seattle it's not usually too bad wearing my textile overpants at this time of year. I'm looking into getting some more info on the AGV Aeromesh pants when it gets warmer. I just feel naked riding with jeans only on my legs.
