Dragon Warning: July-August

Ok guys, this one isn't fake. The governors office in conjunction with Blount County gave a huge grant to the State Troopers and BCSO to step up patrols on the dragon partially do to a recent fatal accident that didn't happen on the dragon, but was falsely reported as on the dragon by the media. It happened on the way up to the dragon. There will be at least 1-2 cops every weekday and at least 3-4 cops on the weekends. It has already started, there was 4 BCSO and about 3 State Troopers handing out tickets today. It was a mess. If you can postpone your trip to September, that would be the best. You can still have a good time, but if you are expecting open roads during the week before late afternoon, you may not get it. This isn't a fake Trooper Cagle message, this is reality and it is already begun since last week. The BCSO are no longer on contract for Alcoa and will be writing tickets now instead of being cool like they have in the past. There was all new BCSO up there today and not the officers who normally work the area and are cool to the riders.

Thanks for the warning... we can't postpone our trip (since there's now about 16 of us going) but we'll definitely watch ourselves.

Personally, I don't mind extra patrols... if it keeps riders a bit safer, I'm all for it.

AR Hwy 123 is getting the same kind of negative attention after a 3rd helicopter evac in about a months span. Looks like the X factor riders are spoiling all our fun

nope it was cool and dry. Perfect day for riding. I made a ton of half passes. I will go from the store around the speed limit and get as far into the dragon as I could until I ran into a state trooper or BCSO and turned around and went crazy fast back.

You can still come Kevin, you can make some good runs in the evening before it gets dark and early early morning or do half runs.

If not this coming weekend, I should be up in early Aug. Gotta figure out my free weekends between now and trackday (Aug 18th)

They may cool off after they do a big show of force for a couple weeks. The reported grant is way too low and I don't see that lasting two months with at least 2 officers up there daily on weekdays and a good deal more on weekends. There was 8 cops up there yesterday all doing pretty much nothing because everyone had slowed or was doing half runs. It was the biggest waste of resources. They need to patrol the higher speed areas leading up to the dragon where the residential houses are and where people are going 90+ blasting past people's front yards where kids play. That are is also where the fatality happened....

Not like this, they usually leave weekdays alone except when accidents need attending to, that has changed. BCSO is no longer contracted through Alcoa, so they are also writing tickets up there now as opposed to when they would just get you a speech.

I think the extra patrols are a good thing.
This only means it is a safer road to ride
or drive .

Only if they patrol the correct roads. That is not the case in this instance.

The road actually has a small number of accidents and a insanely small fatal accident percentage given the amount of traffic and type of traffic that makes it's way through the road. The roads leading up to the area is what has the need for patrols and don't get them as much.
