New Info on Gap Police state

TN is there to run us off and will move on the skyway once they run us on to it.

Here is a post from a local:

Quote:
I just finished a 1 hour discussion with a State Trooper about what is going on up there. (Don't bother asking his name) Breddison has Federal money given to the state to fund the Troopers, there money is not coming from the 60 thousand dollar grant to Blount Co. The 60 thou. grant is to fund B.C.S.D. only. Heavy patrols will last though mid October on the Gap and it will pick back up in the spring. He stated this will go on for the next 2 to 3 years. He also stated that people are stopping and thanking them for slowing down the "crotch rocket and sport cars" guys. He also stated that what is going on up there is going to stop. They already know that riders will migrate to the Skyway, he stated that when that happens they will move part of there patrols over there.

Cash Grab; It's not about a cash grab, the state can only take a max. of 50 dollars from a ticket that they write up there. The county gets the largest portion, so the state ends up loosing big bucks by going up there. Makes since really, if it takes 50 dollars an hour to put a trooper on the road and the state only gets 5 bucks from a small ticket and the rest goes to the county the ticket was written in, then there's no money in it for the state.

Pull offs; gravel pull offs, are meant to be used for disabled vehicles only. There not for use to park all day and take pic's or to let a faster rider go around.

TN has no vested interest in the Gap, there not making any money off it (ie sales tax), so they could not really care. Zee photo and The Pit Stop are the only ones up there that live in TN. So the rest of the tourist money goes to N.C... When it’s only 2 businesses that collect and pay tax, there not going to be worried to much about loosing a few thousand dollars when it comes to 3 lives lost in two days. This is what all this is about anyway.

Parks service; The Parks Service wants no part or the Gap, the Gap borders the park BUT the state has right of way 20 feet off the side of the road toward the park. This is due to 129 is a FEDRAL HIGHWAY. With that, hwy 129 is a restricted hwy; it’s not restricted to commercial truck traffic. So the only ticket they can write to truck drivers is “failure to maintain lane”.. Now with this!! Listen up because this is the only good info. for the truckers that come down that road. If you drive a truck on a curvy mountainous road you must sound your horn before you come around the corner and cross the lane.

Lastly, the state Trooper I talked to said he has to go up there and work this weekend, just like last weekend, and the weekend before. He also stated he hates going up there, but as long as Breddison sends them, then he has to go.

I say close it off on both ends and charge a fee. Make it like a toll-based track. I'd pay to ride!

It's a federal highway, never going to happen unless they make an alternate route to replace it. If they do that, then you can kiss the dragon goodbye because the new route will be built on top it's dead body.

Suches is beautiful the roads there are fantastic. I just went to suches a couple of weeks ago and camoed at lake winfield scott with my dad. A word to the wise there police to patrol heavily in suches. It is different to the the dragon as quite a few people live in the area and on sunday morning there is alot of church traffic. Racer mentality is much more damaging there than at the dragon imo But I do reccomend it as an even better place to ride than the dragon.....

Shady Valley is getting hammered by cops as well. They are stepping up patrols everywhere.

It is getting bad everywhere. In the past year AHP has hired 200 new troopers. They are advertising that next week begins "Take Back Our Roads" campaign. The news is reporting that troopers will be out in full force and writing tickets for 1 mph over. I confirmed this with a source that works for the state transportation dept.

Suches was great. This year we were down for 9 days and did quite a bit of riding outside of the Gap & Skyway. We hit Suches, Blood Mountain area and the Devils Triangle (out of Knox) - all great rides with the exception of a couple nightmare nearly straight uphill switchbacks with fine sand gravel in a part of the Triangle. Did Shady Valley last year and that was really nice too.

Sucks everything is getting slammed with cops. Thinking I might hit a beach vacation next year instead of our annual Gap trip if it's going to be a crap shoot

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I hate f**kin Ron and Nancy for putting that on their website. The devil's triangle is such a stupid name as well, no one refers to it as that here.
