Friday Afternoon Club
In college, we had a Friday Afternoon Club (FAC), where we would get an early start on the weekend, but that was three decades ago. Last Friday, we had a different but great start for a Friday Afternoon Club of motorcycling.
I got a PM from sfarson (Steve) to go for a ride on Friday afternoon. I suggested Lookout Mountain and Golden Gate Canyon. He agreed and we would meet in Golden. My friend Neal, who has a VFR, called me and wanted to go for a ride, and I emailed my friend Dean to ride with us on his Gixxer 1000. We met on time. Me with my old GS1000, and Steve showed up
with his new BMW R1200S.
Neal had a later appointment, so the four of us decided to ride Lookout first, so he could leave, then the three of us could ride up Golden Gate. As we started riding up Lookout, a rider coming down turned around and joined our group going up. We went up pretty quickly, but got stuck behind some trucks near the top. We stopped at the Nature Center to shoot the breeze.
We admired each other's bikes and made fun of mine. The rider who joined us was on a Harley Dyna Super Glide Sport, and we asked if he wanted to ride down with us and then up Golden Gate Canyon. I thought he would slow us down, but he was just as fast as the race bikes.
The Lookout Mountain road is tight and steep, but the road up Golden Gate is tight at the beginning and faster higher up. Except for the Harley, we all took turns leading. Coming down, Steve was very fast, and he wasn't familiar with the road. There was a lot of gray hair on each rider, but that didn't slow us down. The weather was in the 70's and everyone had a great time.
Steve went home from Golden Gate, but Dean, the Harley guy (Steve H), and I went down to Golden and had a soda. Now for the weird part. I told Steve H that Dean teaches the Total Control class. All of a sudden Steve H pulls a copy of Lee Parks' Total Control book from the back of his jacket. He had just bought the book that morning.
I told Steve H he was pretty quick on his Dyna, and he said his gf was faster on her Sportster. I have off every Friday, Dean, an aircraft mechanic, also has Fridays off. Steve H, who finds and explodes old ordinance on the former Lowery base, also has Fridays off. Maybe we can all get together every Friday afternoons for some fast rides?
The first photo shows (left to right) Dean, No Worries, and Sfarson at White Ranch. The second photo shows Dean, Steve H (Harley guy) and Steve (Sfarson). The third photo shows Steve and his BMW R1200S. What a beautiful bike. Note the Ohlins shock, Akrapovic exhaust, and carbon fiber belly pan. In the back is Steve H's Harley.
