I am in the process of getting the FZR ready for the spring and started it up for the first time and noticed a strange noise at idle. Doesn't sound like a knocking or grinding but kind of like small rocks tumbling. Does anyone know what this might be?
Sounds like the typical clutch chatter noise. Try pulling in the clutch lever in at idle to see if the noise goes away. I have a 97 YZF1000R that has pretty much the same engine as your FZR and it has a very loud clutch rattle. It's nothing to worry about, all of them do it.
Could be the EXUP valve in the exhaust pipe rattling. The cables get a little loose and the valve will make a chatter at idle. If it hasn't been serviced in awhile it could be that.
Thanks for the tip. I will check that out and see if I can track down the noise to a closer area.
