I need a new helmet

I've got an end-of-life Shoei RF-800. It's time to replace this well-worn bucket.

I've always enjoyed the relative quietness of the Shoei, but it sacrifices ventilation for the quietness. Arai, on the other hand, seems to do the opposite.

So... What's your preference?

You can't go wrong w/ either. . My Arai Signet is very well ventilated. However, I'm limited to the ones I can wear.

I'd just see what fits you the best obviously, then see which paint you like the best.

FWIW I've heard a lot of manufacturers aren't honoring warranties on helmets bought online.

That's true, I've heard the same thing. In fact I know of one online reseller (who coicidentally was two miles from my house) that was forced to remove Arai from their product line because of this.

Can I drop the name? Anyway, I actually crash tested my Arai, it was the Haga replica, can't remember which model, but it was roundabouts $500. It was comfortable and quiet enough and most importantly it kept my melon intact.

You're not the first person I know to have an Arai save their melon.

I also have a Signet. It's a 5 year old model and very noisy on the Honda. How's the noise level on yours? I'm assuming it's a more current model.

Other then the noise I love the Arai!

I've successfully crash tested an AGV. I bought another. My next one will probably be a KBC or an Icon.

The first helmet I bought for my first bike (a 1989 CBR600 Hurricane, it would probably be a collectors item if I had kept it, what was I thinking???), anyhow I asked the salesman about helmets and he asked me how much my head was worth to me so I said give the one on the top shelf. An Arai Quantum. I've bought them ever since only better models. I own four at the moment, an Edwards replica, and three custom painted, one Bob's Krazy Brush, now Streight Edje, one Streight Edje, and my newest one painted by AirTrix. All RX-7RR3 except for the BKB which is a Signet. Also a removable covering for my oldest helmet. It's called Bruno. I get more looks, honks, thumbs up than if I was to ride down our main strip naked, it's hilarious!!!! Just my 2 cents. Here's a few pics.

Impressive collection!!! love the Bruno one :smilelol:

I had a salesman tell me once that very same answer when I asked him about what's the best helmet, etc... I was like, now dude, I know you want some commission here, but be realistic..thats a loaded question if I ever heard it. I've always read that if you crash in a helmet and it shows any any visible damage, other than scratches or chipped paint..the security/quality is compromised and it should be replaced no matter what the brand name.

My Vega lid works great for me..knock on wood...

Any approved helmet should do it's job when needed, I just like the quality and fit of the Arai's. I've always believed you get what you pay for, but they're alot of good hemets out there just get what you like that fits best, which is very important, and what you can afford. I tried buying the Shoei Scott Russell helmet back in the day but it didn't fit worth a damn so I didn't get it, but all Shoei's are like that for me, they just don't fit my head. I'd rather wear a $10 helmet than nothing at all if I had to!!! That is true what you heard about a helmet being crashed. You should replace it even if it's dropped on a hard surface for that matter because it compromises the structure, but i'd be surprised who actually throws out a good helmet when it's dropped off your seat or your grip/mirror, I know i've done it a time or two or three....
Good luck.

I'm considering this Mainframe Halo (not necessarily this color combo):

$234 is the best price I've found so far, that's MSRP though.

Icon has some specifics about advertising their products. Dealers are allowed to sell for less than MSRP, but they are not allowed to advertise it. If you can't find a better price, I can get it to you for 10% over dealer cost plus shipping. I have a friend who is a dealer. I just bought an Icon Burner jacket from him for $305. Retail is $450.
