GPS on Bikes?

Just a quick question. I'll admit, I've never even seen one in person so I don't know how they work, but has anybody ever put one of those GPS directional dealies on a bike?

Just seems to me that it would be a lot easier for a long trip to program that guy up (or however it works) and then go, rather than have a map or directions in a tank bag and have to stop a lot to look at them.

This is of course assuming you could find a good way to mount it, which i'm sure is possible.

So, any experiances or opinions?

Have you been watching American Chopper/OCC?

I have one. You can get a hand held unit for not too expensive. They work well. But I highly doubt you'd be able to watch it while riding....

Actually have never watched those shows :-P

Plus like I said, it would be for mostly long trips, ie to visit friends in places I havent been before, mostly for the main road numbers. Plus maybe I figure a couple might have some sort of bluetooth earpiece adapter, so I wouldn't have to watch it.

Exactly why I asked the question :-P

Some bikes (KTM adventure bikes and most BMWs) have factory mounting accessories for mounting GPS, or in the case of BMW, mounting/wiring accessories AND factory GPS unit.

But most of the time, people would jerry rig a GPS unit somehow. Garmin is known for making motorcycle specific GPS units. And then these handy riders would fab their own mounting devices and wirings.

Call me a Luddite but I still prefer map (and sometimes compass). GPS is convenient, but when I'm riding, I'm not about being convenient. I'm about being adventurous and having fun.
