gsxr 750 brake issue

i have an 04 gsxr 750 and today i noticed a brake shake whenever i hit it real hard. it would be smooth from 30mph down to about 3-5 mph, and during that last 1/2 second it would vibrate almost as though i was on grooved pavement.

anyone ever heard or experienced anything like this??

Yeah and I sold the Suzuki for a Yamaha - problem solved.. lol.. Just kidding..

Sounds like a warped rotor to me or something wrong with the caliper.. Did you do any hard braking before it happened? Definately look at the rotor real close or try replacing it.

but if it was a warped rotor, wouldnt you feel it all the time when braking..or atleast the majority of the time?

Not necessarily. At a higher speed the rotor of course is spinning faster and if the brake is applied it rubs past the warped part faster. Now at the lower speed it is felt more due to it not rubbing past it as fast thus causing the shaking he is feeling. Its almost the same as on a car. You hear the squealing noise from your brakes at a lower speed then you do at a higher one since they are spinning slower and not rubbing past it as fast.

And 04gixxer750, how hard are you hitting the brakes? You said "whenever i hit it real hard", but how hard is that??

I had a warped rotor on my old bar car last year, and I could feel that freekin thing rubbing all the time, what a pain..but i digress, dont wanna jack this thread..

could be a combination of uneven wear on the brake pad due to a warped rotor..

"I'll take uneven wear, Pat for 200" The 04's have Radial brakes and uneven wear is a big problem. I have a 04 1000 and it is normal on mine aswell. Move the pad for one side of the caliper to the other this fixed mine.

I've never had a warped rotor on my bike, but I have on my car. I felt it at all speeds, though higher speed braking was more obvious.

Good thinkin there Twisty. But I had the same problem on my bike as well. And my brakes aren't radial mounted. I really noticed it on my bike due to the stainless steel braided lines but once I changed out the brakes, the problem went...POOF!! Gone, and now it's nice and smooth again...

awesome, thanks for the replies. i was in boston riding when it happened, so i was breaking pretty good. not rediculous, but definitely stopping faster than a car could. im bringing her to the dealer tomorrow to see what they can do. should i expect this a warranty issue? the dealer has been very awesome to me and i dont want to take advantage, the bike is 2 weeks old with just under 1000 miles....Jason

most definately a warranty issue if the bike is only 2 weeks old..weather its a bad rotor, poorly worn pads or a line issue, that's all things that should never go bad that quickly. was it brand new, or was it demo ride that you got? even so, 2 weeks shouldnt be a problem for them to cover for you.

Yeah definately a warranty issue.. 2 weeks under 1k - there is no way that should be happening - normal wear or not. I have had cars and bikes with warped rotors and when I say warped I am not talking 1/2" here where you could see it wobble off center - it could be off .0005" and you would never visually see it, the pads would clear it at speed but then when you apply brake and the caliper squeezes the rotor you would feel it. Most steel in rotors today, especially on Jap bikes, is made overseas not to our North America standards - here the steel is very good steel and is consistent throughout. There they do not skim the slag and they have little to no standards so the steel you get varies all over the map. This creates hard spots, etc. and can cause warping very easily. That is why I immediately said warped rotor but that was just my theory. Seeing as Twisty owns own of these bikes and experienced the same difficulty and fixed it I would lean towards his theory.
