Hearing a funny noise.

Hey guys and gals. I just changed my oil in my bike a few days ago. I rode it to work the next day and when I got there I was taking off my gear while the bike was idling and I heard a really weird noise in the head. I took my helmet off and ear down by the engine. It was a ticking noise. Something in the valve-train is ticking and I have no idea what.

This was my first oil change on my new bike. I used 20W-50 motorcycle oil and put in 4 quarts just like the manual calls for. I don't know what the hell is going on.

Has anyone experienced this before? I know this is sort of a dead end question but if anyone can relate I would apprciate some insight.

Have you checked the level on the dipstick or window? That's my only suggestion for now.

Yeah I checked the dipstick....it seems to be right where it should be.

I wish I had a sight window though. They seem easier to use.

I might try adding some more oil anyway to see if the tick stops. That is all I can think of too.

Thanks though

the sound may have been there before you changed your oil. Youre on an F3? How many miles?

22,000 miles. I am pretty sure the tick was not there before I changed the oil. It was rather loud after I changed the oil...

Are you saying the thicker oil may have made the tick louder???

To check the oil on my 1990 CBR, the bike has to be level (on the centerstand) and the oil dipstick's top thread just touches the top thread of the inlet. Many people make the mistake of screwing in the dipstick to read the level. If you do that, you'll be 1/2 quart or more low.

this was my first oil change on the bike. I have had it for about 4 weeks. It is the valve train making the noise, but it is so loud I do not think it is from just workin.

How do I adjust my valve like you guys are suggesting???????

It's tough. Shims are involved as well as ripping your motor apart.

I hear ya man! Take it to a bike shop if you are not sure what you are doing. Otherwise it could end up costing you a lot more in the end

common newbie mistake is overtightening the valve cover bolts. they strip very easily. Valve inspections are easy, just remove the tank/airbox/carbs or EFI then the valve cover (rubber gasket should be reuseable). Check with a shop manual for locating TDC and squeeze that gauge betw the cams and shims. I'm not sure if F3 has manual or automatic cam chain tensioner.

get a shop manual before working on your bike.

I always think these are going to be the CCT but hate to jump to that conclusion at first...
