Oil

Is it typical to change oil every 600 miles? My Clymer book says that is what is recommended for my SV, but at that rate I'll be changing every 1-2 weeks! I'll do it if that's what is best for the bike but it just seems excessive.

My service manual says to change oil after the first 600 miles, then after every 7K. Yes I said 7000 miles. I dont think I will wait that long but 3-4K seems reasonable.

Ok. So I was planning on changing about every 2k-2500 so maybe I'll just stick with that plan. Also, the book recommends 10W40, which came as a bit of a surprise to me. Is that typical as well ? I think that I may just take it in to the Suzuki dealer for the first oil change/service and see what they have to say and then I'll start doing it on my own after that.

The dealers pretty much follow what your manual says.

Be sure the 10-40 your book says meens any 10-40 or is it a special cycle 10-40. You may require certain addatives for your clutches that is not found in conventional oil fir your car. If it onlu specifies weight and car grade oil will do then treat your bike to Mobil 1 Your motor will love it and it gives added protection when oil isnt present, such as dry sumping the lower forword cylinder that is comon on the sv when "UPon1"

The first 600 miles is pretty normal for all bikes.

Then every 2-3K.

Remember oil is cheap and motors aren't! You can't change it too often!

Yeah you must get motorcycle oil. Not auto oil. Remember your MC oil is shared in the tranny and the clutch. So get some good stuff.

I know I just went out and spent well over $200 on oils today for the chop. Engine oil, tranny oil, primary oil, silicone brake fluid, oil filters, K&N air filter, K&N air filter clean/oil kit, spark plugs, and a few others. Bikes are expensive...

changing the oil for the first time at 600 miles is ok, just follow what your manual says and listen to these senior members, they know their stuff.
I'm inclined to do it right around 3k miles.
changing the oil too frequently never hurt any motor, if anything it will help keep it clean, and extend the life of the motor.

That may be the first time I have ever been referred to as "senior" anything sense high school. I'm not sure if I should feel good or cry!
