chargin problem

Hi,
I have a 96 honda cbr 600. It seems to have a charging problem. I know a lot about cars but not about bikes. I put a new battery in it not too long ago. It seems like the alternator charges sometimes then doesnt other times. I can start it up fine and be riding then all of a sudden the gauges will go crazy and die. then the bike starts to miss and lose power till it just dies. put the clutch in and let it out and the bike jump starts itself and all is fine usually. It only happens once per ride. I would say alternator but the way that it starts charging again idk. What other possibilitys am i looking at here. and cost to fix. any info you can give me would be awsome cuz i need to fix this because i cant afford the 16mpg in my truck to work everyday

If that happened to me, I would freak out. But I wouldn't let it happen again. You need a shop manual, either paper or downloaded, and a $20 digital voltmeter. The manual will tell you the resistance or volt readings for testing the connectors, wires, battery, regulator/rectifier, and alternator.

While I was waiting for the manual, I would take apart every wire connector I could get to, clean it with contact cleaner, and put it back together, especially all the safety (kickstand, etc) connections.

sounds like you need a new voltage regulator/reticifer Honda are know for there bad electrical systems

There is a safety switch by the clutch lever, but my CBR manual refers you to Section 25 of the Common Service Manual to find it. Stupid Honda Manual.

ok so i found this nice site with a pair of trouble shooting charts

so i followed the first one and it said the rr was gone. followed the second one and it said the stator was gone.... figures. so i pulled the stator cover off to have a look see figureing maybe the wires would be all a mess and that would solve my problem. To my supprise oil comes out when i pull the cover off. now bear with me like i said i am a car guy... but there shouldnt be oil in there should there??. i mean there are a few gears like the "stater driven gear" and "stater idler gear" as they are labeled in my clymer's manuel. Are these the gears the actually come off the starter to start the bike? so thats all they spin? or do they spin constantly. as you can tell i am lost. lol

Yes for oil in the stator. But I don't think your problem is there. While you are riding, something is cutting off your ignition. Besides the ignition switch and emergency switch, my CBR has three other switches that can cut off the ignition: the clutch lever safety switch, kickstand switch, and neutral switch. The kickstand switch receives the most rain and crud, so it fails the most. But I would find and clean these five switches before messing with the charging system. If you are losing complete power, then I would check the fuses, rectifier and wiring.

see its not a problem of the ignition cutting off. its the bike stops charging. if i ride at night i can see it in the head light. it will be bright as day and brighter and dimmer from higher up in the rpm to idle. but then out of no where for no rhyme or reason it seems like the stator stops working and then the light goes dim at no matter what rpm. problem is the battery then gets drained over time so the bike can not function. no spark and what not. this is when it starts to miss fire and then die. if i were to stop and pull over the starter would not function. but putting it in gear then running and poping the clutch jump starts it and all is well again. i am going to purches a stator and a RR and hope that cures it

There's no feeling like spending four hours (most of the time on your knees, with your back shaped like a snake) and $300 for a new stator and still having the original problem. If you have a $10 or $20 digital voltmeter from Sears, and a shop manual (paper or downloaded) for your bike, you can troubleshoot the wiring, switches, R/R, and stator.

i did just that. like i said in the previous post i did two different trouble shooting procedures. the problem there was one said the stator was good but the RR was bad. the other one said the stator was bad but the RR was good....

For saving time and money, any modern (1980's onward) R/R will work to replace your old one. One from a Honda may have the same connectors as yours.

well this is how it goes. the stator wasnt pumpin out enough juice in the first place and the rr was toast so it was only letting the little bit of juice in from time to time. so needless to say i replaced both and i am in a lot better shape. now only problem is that after all these problems it drained my batt one too many times so i need to replace that too. haha we will see if its still under warranty
