What would you pay?? Kawi 636 '03'

I am looking to get into a rocket pretty cheap and found a 2003 636. The catch on the whole thing is that 2nd gear is out and needs to be replaced. His starting price is at 4000. What do you think its worth being that it has to be worked on. I do all mechanical work myself. I don't sell or buy very often though.
Thanks,
Mike
I am a honda man but the kawi felt way to comfy to pass.

No I did a tranny in a Suzuki and a cbr 600r and right now i am on a zx6rr (putting a complete diff tranny in for better track performance don't know how you could really get better but i am getting paid for it). Its not the work i am worried about it is what would be the price to shoot for. Tranny work is simple to me and the disasembly gives me something to do. I really just don't want to pay to much.

what would be the cost on the parts that you would need to get it working? How many miles does the bike have? 4000 is a bit much for a bike with problems so unless everything is in GREAT shape I would cut that in half....

to give you an idea, last spring i picked up a '03 636 with 47**ish miles in mint shape, mostly stock, had flush mounts, hid lights, and not a single scratch for $5500, that was the high end of what i was seeing, but worth it for me to buy a bike in great shape

If you are not afraid to do the work then talk him lower way lower the seller is trying to recoup as much as he can on a screwed up piece of equipment so he can turn around and another bike to screw up so go for it if you want the project but you would be paying way too much at four grand.

It depends on what the rest of the bike is like. I'd offer him 3K ,tops. The parts won't be cheap and it's good you can do the labor.

I'd do some more shopping. Even if the fix is easy for you, you can prob find a better deal and use the repair time to RIDE

Here's my view. Does the 636 use a cassette-type trans? If not, you have to split the cases. Not an easy job. Plus, who knows what else is wrong. And after all your work, you have a basic 636.

If I was going do do a lot of work on a bike, I would get a good running ZX-11. Then I'd put on aftermarket suspension, brakes, windscreen, and seat. At least then I'd have something unique. A comfortable rocketship that handles and stops.

I'm not sure... is it worth only $1500 less to have to pull the motor and split the cases?

He is a really good friend also so i don't really want to piss him off on top of it all so what would be a reasonable offer with the total of parts from gears to gaskets is around 600$ that isn't including the shift forks. I don't know if i am going to need them and if i do i have some in my shop form a salvaged 636 that came through about a month and a half ago.
Keep the info coming this is very helpful to me
Thanks

I will have to split the cases. I might put in a rr tranny though if i can find one through the dealer in town. Speaking of the dealer they are telling me they would take atleast 1200 off the top coming through the door if he wanted to trade it in. So would i take that off the trade in price or the retail price.
