Spring thaw...

Thought I'd make a thread:

When I put the bike away, i put some sta-bil in the gas, changed the oil, and that was about it.
Well last weekend I thought i'd start up the bike for the first time in a while. its been sitting since about november. Starter cranked the engine but it was weak. so I bought a battery charger and charged it up. I also drained the carbs, the gas didnt look too bad though (no idea what to look for). Battery charged, back in. So now the starter cranks well, battery sounds strong, but still no startup. My next step is to pull the gas tank, replace the spark plugs.

So what happens when I try to start? With zero choke (choke off), the starter cranks but nothing really happens. with full choke, it cranks and I'm hearing the kinda "thud thud thud" noise that the bike would make if it was about to stall.

Any advice from the gearheads? I thought sparkplugs were supposed to last a while? I'll replace em anyway, they're cheap ($3/each at the dealer). And as far as the carbs, Don't know if sta-bil did its work, but this bike is an 06. could they be gummed up already?!??

Plugs might be fouled from all the cranking. You shoulda pulled the battery and put in on a battery tender. Thats where mine is as we speak...

Pull the plugs. The sta-bil, as long as you added the correct amount, will do it's job.

when i pull mine out, do i have to baby it for the first tank since the stabil is in it or just run like normal?

Run it like you stole it. The sta-bil won't hurt it or effect performance.

Marko is always right (from my experience )
So i bought 4 spark plugs today when i went to the dealer to ogle at bikes.

dropped two new ones in and BOOM she fired rite up, first try, no complaining (except once, and then i realized i forgot to turn the fuel back on). So that was the problem, i guess. or maybe it was a combination of the battery, old fuel in carbs and the plugs. I didnt think the plugs looked too bad... I'll post a pic and you guys can decide.

btw the plugs only set me back $12 for 4. not bad.

are they supposed to go bad like this or is this a symptom of a bigger problem?

um you said the bike is a 06? shouldnt be cards on it.. right?

if it has carbs pull the bowls off, clean the jets, if the jets get gummed up it wont run, also did you just poor the stuff in the gas and not run the bike? or did you run it enough to get the stuff in the carbs.. if you didn't run it enough i bet it's just the jets gummed up. other then that im not sure :s make sure your getting spark

and yes, it is carbed.... I hate carbs.
i poured the stabil in and ran it for about 10 mins. is that enough?

idling NO If your were riding it. probably but I would go more.

When trying to figure it out and you have gas and good batt power.


Always check the basics.

Gas
Air
Spark

Normally its bad spark plugs, then maybe bad gas, and you almost always have air.

New plugs will do wonders to a bike thats running poorly. Trust me on this. I've replaced mine every year. At nearly $50 bucks/set.

see i wouldnt mind doing that, only 6 bux for me and easy to do, just that i thought plugs are supposed to last for a while. (like 10k+ miles )

I usually foul mine beyond repair trying to get it to start in cold weather long before that.

yeah thats prolly it. u know what i think I'm gonna just replace them after a few months of riding and see if they're still fouled.

Just have a few extra laying around. I wouldn't replace them until they need.

My gf has an 06 Ninja 250, and like you, I put stabil in the gas before storage, rode it about a half hour, then parked it. This spring when we pulled them out, I had to crank on it a while to get it running, but it did fire. Now it runs like a top. I much prefer the fuel injection on my SV!!!
