Wheel maintenance

I got both wheels off to paint my engine covers, front forks, swingarm... I noticed the axel has a little corrosion in the middle. Any suggestions on maintenance on the axel and bearings besides axel grease and bearing oil? I was thinking about hittin it with 2000-4000 grit paper and polishing the surface.

huh, thats odd. I guess that would work, as long as the surface was absolutely smooth after. I'd check your seals as well, cause its odd that the axle would corrode.

The axle will get some corrosion on it. Remember there really is nothing in the centers riding on that section. The only place there is contact is where the bearings ride against the axle.

Go ahead and do what you want to the corroision. It really isn't hurting anything and it won't hurt to fix it up any.

As far as grease... I just use some high temp axle/bearing grease. You can see some in these pics when I greased up my tripples and bearings.

Its the same can I've used on countless cars and bikes. Make sure you clean up the bearings and stuff first. You can put alot on it and clean up the excess once all back together.
