can it be the battery? my fan didn't come on!

i was riding today and got stuck in traffic. i noticed that my temp gauge was rising and the fan wasnt coming on. i dont know how long its been going on for. can it be the battery not having enought juice to power it?

If it has juice to run the lights, it can run the fan.

Check your coolant level and make sure there is nothing blocking your fan. mine comes on at 220F.

Check those for starters.

Check owners manual or service manual.

I think that on yours (if similar to the honda) has a radiator cap on the side of the radiator behind the side fairing. And also an overflow bottle on the front or side of the engine also behind the fairing. Usually on the same side.

Yeah one thing at a time.

Check your battery. With bike off and sitting. Should show about 12.9 volts. If not your battery could be low.

What temp did the bike get to? Most fans don't kick on till 215-220 degrees. That is normal.

if you want a cheap solution.
put a switch in your handle bar direct to the fan.

My buddy did that and it works great especially in traffic or slow riding. If you do this i highly suggest a heavy gauge wire.

But still try to find out why it's doing this. It didn't quit working for no reason. Check your altenator output if the battery is good and check for corroded wires.

Why is your bike in Celcius? You're in NJ.

sounds like a charging problem. id suggest getting a shop manual and checking voltage by manufactures specs.
if that checks out try bench testing the fan. my 929 fan quit for no reason, tested it, no good so got another on ebay. works fine now.

gonna need a voltage meter. my 929 manual says battery should be 13-13.2V fully charged. below 12.3 is under charged. w/ the bike running at normal temp it should be 15.5V at 5000rpm, w/ the hi beams on.

bench testing is unhooking the fan from the bike and supplying a relialble 12V source. battey charger on low setting or car battery. hook jumper wires to the fan, gonna have to find ground wire so you dont hook it up backwards, could cook the fan if backwards. then you know if the fan is good if it runs on a good 12V source.

a good manual will tell you wire colors (my honda fan ground is green) all bikes are different, and how to test electric components.

And a good switch. However, I also suggest doing this after the factory cooling fan switch. That way if you forget the fan will still come on when its suppose to.

However, I don't think that is the issue. It could be the battery. Is it holding a charge? But before you start throwing parts at it.. I suggest you do what dscort said... test the fan.

Still sounds like the charging system and/or battery.

Test that first.
