Honda F3 Speedo problem

My speedo and odometer stopped working on my 97 F3. Anyone with this particular bike know how to find out what is wrong and how to fix? or how much it would cost to fix?

did you check the speedo cable? see if its damaged or just come lose? that could be part of it. did it just die all of the sudden or was it starting to act up recently before it died?

I've been told that its not a cable that comes loose but would more likely be a sensor or a shortage. It did act up before it died. The speedo would not work, then it worked for about 5 minutes, then died completely. I was only able to take the bike apart so far and was able to test one of the connectors for an electrical reading but did not get any. Either I am doing something wrong or it could be a shortage.

I was hoping there would be someone who had a similar bike and problem who was able to fix it on their own, offer some help. Not quite sure if the speedo is hooked up like the other bikes.

I believe its electronic speedo with a speed sensor.

I checked the fuses in the fuse box and one on the left side under the seat. They seem fine. Don't know if I am missing any.

I don't know where the sensor is and what it looks like. If I get to it, how do I know its broken?

if we cant answer it for you, larry will be online in the evenings..he's the resident mechanical god!

i'll see if I can find some speedo diagrams for you in the mean time as well

Thanks man. You guys are awesome.

I really need to stop guessing my speed. The other day my gf was telling me I was going 60 in a 35 zone and like 30 in a 45 zone.

My 1990 CBR uses an electronic speedo. I checked my Honda Service Manual and the Honda Common Manual (does any other manufacturer make you buy two manuals?). I couldn't find anything on the speedo or tach. Even the wiring diagram only shows the instrument lights for the speedo, so I can't tell you what wires to trace. You could try talking to the shop manager at your Honda dealer.

I would suggest to check the actual sensor for physical damage and the front sprocket... things like this are hard to figure out over the internet!

I'm not positive, but I think the speedo is driven off of a sensor near the front sprocket. It either goes into the sprocket cover or into the case just above the sprocket. IIRC, it is not uncommon for the sprocket retaining bolt to back off and damage the speedo sensor on some bikes. It is certainly worth a look to see if that is what is going on.
