whats wrong? been sitting too long?

ok so i have nebver had a bike before. i get one last year and cant ride it because i didnt take the msf and i want to before i try and ride. then i lose my license so still cant. bike started fine before. so i get a new battery which was dead from it sitting and put it in. light went on, everything was good until i went to start it. flipped it to run and it made this weird puttering click noise and faded off but wont start or anything
doesnt even try
whjen i push the start it just lights up the "oil" light and does nothing
the puttering finally faded away and it doesnt do it anymore but it just has this strong gas smell. i dont know whats wrong

I'm the opposite of an expert but sounds like a bad starter to me.

whats your battery voltage? try charging up the battery ($18 chargr from autozone), if that doesnt work you may need to clean carbs. Also put in new plugs... new plugs works wonders...

If the engine is not turning over i would go with a new starter first. Are you sure the motor is not locked up or out of oil?

I had a similar problem starting my bike this spring, turned out to be a combination of bad battery, bad gas.

Sounds like a dead battery. Even if it is new, doesn't mean it was fully charged. Charge that first, and give it a whirl, then go from there!

If it was mine, I would take out all the spark plugs, put it in gear, and try and turn the engine over with the rear wheel. That would tell me if the engine was seized. If it turned, the problem might be electronic.

A 91 probably has safety switches like the clutch interlock, sidestand switch, and neutral switch. If any are bad the engine may not crank.

the clicking sound points me toward dead battery. charge your battery and try it again. they can have enough power to light the lights up, but not to start the bike. start there first.

did you check your fuses and connections at the solenoid? its possible that one of those may be bad. look at everything from battery all the way to the starter. you're gonna have to take fairings off to do it though.

How do you know? It should show 12.9 volts after sitting over night without a charger on it.

I just doubt it is the starter. But if it is the solenoid, most the time its a 1 piece unit.

Always check the simplest things first. Most of the time its those that go bad. No Worries also has a good point but he's leading towards some major failure.

I would check the safety switches as well. Probably a kickstand, clutch, and the run/off switch.

If its clicking then your starter should be engaging. All your safety switches will stop it before you even hear a click. It sounds like a bad/hung up starter or a locked up motor.

sounds to me like its probably hydrolocked. try pulling the plugs, and cranking the motor by hand, since if it is hydrolocked, spinning it over with the starter will just make it shoot whatever fluid is in the cylinders everywhere making a big mess. what makes me think hydrolock is simply the fact that you mentioned that it spun freely before, then in the course of one day outside, it locked up. likely a sticking float in a carb letting gas into the cylinder when it shouldnt be, which floods, and locks up your motor.
