2000 GSXR 750 surging...any ideas?

Hey there guys I just finished building a 2000 GSXR 750 that had been wrecked in fall of 04 and has been sitting in plastic wrap and a few boxes ever since. Well I got it about 1 month ago and I just finished rebuilding it! I will post a pic in a few min. It has 7700 miles on it, with a Yosh Pipe I think its a full system. I have checked the compression and it checks out! I have changed the plugs, oil filter, oil, coolant, and fuel, and air filter. This is the first bike I have worked on and I'm learning as I go.

My question: When I'm trying to hold a steady road speed it seams very difficult to stabilize my speed in any gear under 4500 rpm with out it surging as if I was modulating my wrist back and forth just a fraction. It feels like its changing back and forth from on throttle and off throttle. Is this common with fuel injected bikes or do I need to do some trouble shooting?

If this were a car I think I would check a throttle position sensor first. It seams fine all the way through the rpm range as far as tuning goes. It pulls smoothly anyways under acceleration. I was wonderning if this could be helped by a PCIII or any kind of mod like the pair valve?

Any idaes guys?

Check your battery. Possibly a loose ground.

Actually I would say check the throttle cables freeplay/slack. You might have it too tight. Add in some freeplay. You'd be surprised how much of that might just be you and your body going over bumps.

OK thanks guys!! I have adjusted the throttle cables to both extremes and about everywhere inbetween... I know the battery cables and grounds are good too as I assembled it all myself and double checked all the wiring. I don't think its all me I know some of it is but at times it gets very violent like I'm smacking the throttle open and shut really fast many times in a row...

Thanks for the suggestions I'm going to check a few things tomorrow and change the plugs again too. I pulled them tonight because I was getting a little bit of smoke and they looked like they were close to carbon fouled. all black and sooty.

That almost sounds normal.... My 01 Gixxer 750 jerks a little bit at low RPMs 2k or under and I was told that it was normal and a TRE (Timing Retard Eleminator) would take care of it.

Does the 2000 have the exhaust valve? Is it in good working condition and its cables tight?

Thanks for the replys. I had the throttle cables off and lubed them again to make sure they were operating free. I also checked the position of the Throttle Position Sensor and it was off so I now realigned it to the proper position. It seams to run better now and jerks less while trying to cruise. But I have since noticed that I'm running very rich. It has a full yosh exhaust and k&n filter but I thought that would make it run lean not rich. Any Ideas where to start looking? Or do you know how to reset the ECM?

THANKS to everyone Who responded!!!! This is the best forum on the net!!!

I found that my throttle cable was sticking a bit so once I got it lubed up and free from stick It was not adjusted properly which I think was the main problem with the surge! Also I realized I was an idiot! In my many times removing the air box i found that the vaccum lines that runs from the intake manifold to the Intake Air Pressure Sensor was stuck down hidden from view and I forgot to reconnect it!! Walla no more blowing of smoke and running very rich!!! Problem solved. I hope my stupidity helps someone else in trouble shooting their problem in the future!! Thanks again!!

And yes a PCIII Will be on order soon!!
