97 GSXR 600 Clutch Issues

I am having issues with my clutch. It was replaced about 2-3 months ago by a motorcycle shop. There were some grooves on the outer housing of my clutch plates (which I was told by the dealership, which was trying to charge an arm and a leg to repair... I believe thats the clutch basket?). Any way, about one month ago my clutch is slipping in all gears around 7-9K rpm and only if I am accelerating hard, if I am taking it easy it does no tslip at all. I was told it was my clutch basket when I asked around, what do you all think? I was told by the mechanic aty the dealership to use a light sandpaper to remove the grooves. Any suggestions would be great...

This is what my Haynes Honda manual states: (in proper British) "Severe indentations by the clutch plate tangs of the channels in the center and drum will cause snagging of the plates preventing correct engagement. If this damage occurs, renewal of the worn components will be required."

So it seems that the clutch basket has to be replaced. If so, there are aftermarket ones made from billet that are probably cheaper and better than Suzuki's. But what caused it? A broken spring, slipping the clutch, wrong adjustment, sloppy shifting....?

Are you sure you don't just need to adjust the clutch?

Not sure what may have caused it, purchased used from a guy who used it on the track often. There was obvious grooves on the fingers when I looked at it.

If adjustment is just needed, is that something I can do? (I have an aviation/automotive maintenance background and a good habit of puting things back the way it came off)

Try to adjust it at the lever. You'll see a big silver ring that is threaded... If not you can adjust it on the right side of the motor. Just follow the clutch cable.

Check your owners manual to see what it calls for on "free play". But normally it is like 1/8" - 1/4" maybe 1/2" nothing more.

Its still slipping... guess i will have to get a new clutch basket (the mechanic at the shop told me I can use a very fine sand paper to remove the grooves, it may take a while, but the prices I am hearing will have me go this route)
