Aluminum Engine Repair Cracked Block

Hi,

I have a crack in my engine block that needs to be repaired. I have done a bit of research and it appears an aluminum engine can be welded and repaired. Has anyone done this? Are there any specific products that you used? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...

can you weld? If not most speed shops can. Call around to some speed shops and you get some ideas of cost.

first of all, how big of a crack are we talking? dont try fixing this on your own, take it to a professional to get it done right.

Depends on the place the crack occurs....if the crack is in a non-load bearing area that doesn't cause mis-alignment of bearing and close-tolerance flat (ie; gasketed or interference fit) surfaces, then the repair can be done. If the crack causes changes in bearing alignment (ie:; crank journals, head surfaces, ect) then the replacement of the part is usually called for. Fixing a main case water jacket is usually ok, as long as it doesn't cause misalignment or warpage (the main problem with welding todays ultra-thin vacuum formed castings). Take it to a professional performance machine shop that specializes in motorcycle rebuilds (somebody that builds a lot of racebike engines and has dealt with a lot of catastrophic failures). They can tell you if it makes economic and engineering sense to repair or replace. The problem with block cracks that are heat-related (you didn't say how the cracking occurred, overheating or crash-related) is that when a motor gets hot enough to crack castings,, usually other issues surface, too.

It's seldom as simple as slapping on a little JB weld or firing up the Sears mig welder and sending you on your way......

it can be done but take it some were that does it so you can trust there work and you know it is done right or it will cost more if it isnt done right

i would take it to a good machine shope they can tell you if it can be fixed or not and if it can be fixed they can do it that way you know it is good work and it is done right

Good info right here... a crack in the block is probably indicative of something fairly serious.
