BMW R1200 RT Total Electrical Failure

Hi All,

I really hope someone is able to help me with this problem.

I have an early 2006 BMW R1200 RT which has been working fine since I've owned it, which is about a year. It was fine last Friday on my daily commute to and from work. On Saturday I gave it a wash (bucket and sponge job, no pressure wash), and this morning is fails to turn on.

By that I mean I turn the key and absolutely nothing happens. No lights come on, the intrument panel remains completely blank. There is no click of relays, no sound of injectors or servos powering up. Absolutely nothing happens.

I've put a meter on the battery and that reads as 13.04V. The cables are connected fine, I've checked all the connectors I can easily find after removing the front side panels and lifting the tank up to look underneath. And I don't seem to be able to see anything.

I've tried both keys and the backup plastic key, and I've wiggled the kill switch back and forth all to no avail.

I've called my dealer and the place I usually buy parts from and both are at a loss as to what the problem could be (other than, "bring it in and we'll take a look at it").

I'm completely stumped myself. I can't find anything on the web that seems even remotely similar to this problem. Does anyone here have any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

Hey jeditom,

Is that voltage reading of 13.04 with the key turned to the on position? If not, what is the voltage with the key turned to the on position?

Have disconnected your battery cables, cleaned them, and re tightened them? Thats the easiest troubleshooting step.

it might be just a bad cell in the battery itself. try hooking it up to a battery charger and see what it does.
