Grinding going into second gear only

Hey everyone,
So I picked up my first street bike, it is a 1988 Suzuki Katana 600. It runs great, old so it has its little quirks but over all a great riding bike. My only issue is it grinds going into second gear nearly every time. It does not grind going into any other gear, doesnt matter if you down shift or up shift through them. I cant really figure it out, it does not matter the rpm i am running it at, whether it is idle or high, but when you go from 1st to second it will grind, with that being said it DOES NOT grind down shifting into second, only on the up shift. I have had it where I go to up shift as well but it wont, it will hit second and then stop, leaving me in neutral, try it again then it will go into second, and still grinding. Now with a car i am a pretty good mechanic, I can fix just about anything, but bikes are a new ball game to me, any thoughts? Does a bike transmission have synchros like a car does that can go bad? is it a clutch pate or something? Any words of wisdom would be great! thank you for your help!!

You need to adjust the clutch (it should be done every 4,000 miles). This link should help:
