'87 CBR 600 suspension?

Does anyone know what type of front suspension an '87 CBR600 uses? I have a buddy that picked one up for a starter bike and the front on his seems especially loose...he says he's got about 6in of downward travel on the front when he gets on the brakes. He didn't get any owner/user manual with the bike and I'm not sure where to look to find this info.

Sound like dead forks.
Look under the cap on top.You may be able to put some air back in them.
Be careful a little air goes along way.

ahhh, 87 hurricane...one of my old race bikes....check the air pressure...cant remember what it use to be, but i might have a manual kicking around...i know ive seen one in my garage but finding it might be a different story, also tell your bud to get new fork springs right away thats the first thing to do with it...

any other info you need let me know, i use to have to drill holes in the airbox and rejet for it , cause you cant fit individual air filters on that bike...again let me know and my friend still has one so i can look at stuff on it for ya if needed

Low on air? So that would be cartridge forks?

Thanks for the info guys!

Jack: Where would he go for springs for that bike? Would any modern Honda springs work or does he need to get something specific for the bike? If you happen to find the pressure specs lying around, that would be awesome too.

for some strange reason, if i can remember right, when i put the progressive suspension springs in it , we didnt use air anymore, but i could be very wrong on that, i had my forks done over by a place in california and they revalved them etc...and some thing tells me it didnt need air after that...but i could be very very wrong...it was a while ago...

I know i have my race folder and that gives me all my specs that i used to set up the bike for different tracks and has all my suspension settings, so ill look for that and look for the manual....

The original CBR Hurricane used a basic 35mm damping rod fork (not a cartridge fork - we didn't get those until later on sport bikes).

Best thing you can do is put in fresh oil, RaceTech Gold Valve Emulators and the right springs for your weight. It's still going to be a Hurricane ... but it'll handle a bit better

The excellent Haynes manual covers CBR's from 87-91. The 87 uses a damping rod. To check the air pressure, raise the front tire off the ground. Pressure should be from 0-6 psi. Says to never exceed 42 psi.

My GS1000 came with air forks in 79. I bought a kit that connected the two air caps together into one air cap so both sides were even. Used a tiny syringe pump to air them up. When I put Progressive springs in, it said not to use air.

bike is filthy, but must have been racing in the rain since i have my "rain" tire the metzler on the front

hehe, it was a great bike in 1989...actually it was an awesome bike till the dam FZR600 came out.(fzr was faster)...i started out racing on a 85' ninja 600 and that bike was horrible on the track with its 16" wheels and a transmision that kept popping out of gear on downshifts....the following year i got the 600 hurricane when it first came out in 87' and it was about .4-.5 seconds faster in the quarter mile (which is huge) and handled just great, my first practice session i was 3 or 4 seconds better than my best race times on the 600 ninja (i was just a noob at that time)....

but then like always those dam FZR's came out and i moved on to gsxr750's and 1100's in 93 or so....

the hurricane is/was a neat bike, but after riding my neighbors 2003 gsxr600 a few times i know what you mean..

Still looking for the 600 hurricane manual....i know i sold the repair manual with the bike but i know ive seen the manual that comes with it kicking around, unless i cleanded the garage and threw it out, which is unlikely but still looking

Hey guys! He got a service manual off of ebay for that bike and he found a high rep/low cost mech in the area to do the work and the 40k valve job! We should have him runnin' high for summer here in a couple weeks. (something like $300 for both the front fork and valve job )
