D'oh! Need help, no front brakes!!!



The crap with my bike continues...

A friend wanted to ride my bike and try it out, in his hurry to ride, he didn't let me take the disc lock off. Fortunately he didn't try a quickstart, so he wasn't thrown, the bike just came to a sudden controllable stop. But he noticed that I no longer have front brakes. The front brake lever just pulls in all the way.

Any idea what may have happened?

Also noticed on my long ride back to the storage in first gear going slowly, that I thought the front wheel made a slight scratching sound.

Any advice or guesses would be appreciated.

YOu bent the **** out of your disc (probably) and may have thrown your caliper out of alignment. The noise...probably brake related.

I would check your brake line bolts... make sure they're tight and you may want to bleed them... because you now probably have air in them.

Once you get rid of that..and your brakes at least squeeze tight...then you can check to see if you did, as Chev says, bend the crap out of your rotor or screwed up your caliper mount.

This is also why most disc brake locks come with that dilly to put in your ignition key hole... You can also buy these cords to run from your disc to your clutch lever... anything to get you to stop and think!

Thanx.

Will check the brake bolts tomorrow, the rotor as well.

Unfortunately, the lock just came with the lock & keys, no ignition cover or pouch for it even, and it is an EVO Kryptonite lock. My friend didn't think I'd always be putting the lock, and look.

I'm really hoping this is something I can take care of myself. As I'm really not looking forward to taking the bike back to the shop so soon, especially since I felt they tried to get over on me last time.

Good news, you didnt do it, so buy some wave rotors, a magnesium rim, and brembo brakes and send your friend the bill.

I think the pad has been knocked loose, allowing the piston in the caliper to expand to far.
Probably warped the rotor also.
That's why you always tie something to the lock to remind you it is there.

Unfortunately he isn't good for it. Carrying on about it will get me nothing but more annoyed, so just going to have to take a very large and move on.

I was really hoping it wouldn't involve me taking it to a shop, since they have a bad habit of 'finding' something else that needs to be fixed at a several hundred % markup it seems. I'll have to suck it up, keep the bike in storage until I have the money to take it to the shop.

The lock didn't come with any kind of marker, and like I said my friend hopped on the bike, I guess assuming I wouldn't lock the bike in front of window.

Well, I do have brakes. One guy at the shop guessed I needed to pump the brakes a bit and they would return, which he was right. But I definitely hear scraping when I roll the bike, so either calipers are stuck like he guessed, or worst case I bent the rotor.

I'm guessing it isn't possible to see the actual bend in the rotor? It's not something immediately visible to the naked eye? I ask because I couldn't detect anything just looking at it.

I'm really hating the idea of taking it to a shop. Hopefully my friends can help me replace it myself, so I can buy the rotor myself. Ah well...

Get the front off the ground (whatever way you want) and spin it. Any warping or bend should be easy to find.

look for scrapes in the rotor.
The pads will scrub lightly even if perfect.
You may not have noticed the scrubbing yet, just because you weren't looking for it.

Besides bending the rotor, there is the possibility that the wheel could be bent.

Wheels arent too hard. Buy a manual for your bike (even if youre not doing any work just get one), and see what you will need to remove the wheel and replace parts. Tools, TORQUE WRENCH, front end stand, grease etc. If it looks like more than you want to get into, then take it to a shop. But get a manual first.

I bought a Clymer manual off of Ebay, and got a reproduction of the original manual off the net. For complex things I like them, but for basic stuff they are lacking.

I only ask about taking it in, because the guesses now are getting pretty pessimistic. I'm waiting for someone to post that I may have cracked the frame or engine, from a slow 5 - 10mph start. Sorry, don't mean to sound like an ass.

The actual work to remove & replace I think I can handle, but with my inexperience I'm not sure if I can identify the source of the problem accurately. I know if I take it to the shop, they want $70 just to id the problem, then they charge for parts, & labor. For every part involved, they seem to want to charge an hour of labor.

My previous experience with a shop has led me to believe that if they saw the problem was as simple as readjusting the caliper, they would tell me that I need completely new brakes, rotors, and probably another new front tire. My problem is simply I'm not sure I can trust the shop. I am trying a different one, but they are really all part of a chain.

I do appreciate all the help.

When it comes to a shop, word of mouth is the best!
Ask around about different shops to get the low down. You may get lucky, find some free advice or even help to look at it, diagnose and or fix it.
