Removing Upper Triple - Never Mind

Update - I just looked at my bike with a fellow rider, here in the office, that happens to ride a cruiser. He identified that minor point I was overlooking. I didn't realize there is a "bump stop of sorts" built into the frame that only allows for removing the upper clamp (with ignition switch installed) if the bars are rotated all the way to the right.

So, I suspect my head bearings need tightening as I have been experiencing that clunky feel/sound when braking (not every time) or going over a series of bumps on the road. I removed both pinch bolts and the bolts underneath the upper triple clamp that secure the clip-ons (4 total).

I assumed the upper would just lift up and off with these 4 bolts removed. I was able to get the upper to lift slightly from the forks but it seemed the ignition switch was preventing the upper clamp from lifting any further. I proceeded to look all around the ignition switch as it appears that the upper triple clamp does rest on both sides of the ignition switch but it doesn't appear to be any type of bolt attachment. I didn't want to start just yanking on the thing for fear of damaging something

I have an actual factory service manual that is of no help. I am sure I may be overlooking something but not sure what. If you have removed your upper please chime in. My bike is an 03 ZX7R with 3500 miles.

Ride... I just did this on my 9R... it can be removed without removing the ignition..it's just tricky work. You can move the triple and the ignition just slighty to allow it to clear those stops..... If I was there I know I could show you...

Can you elaborate a little on that, removing without the ignition switch? For me, when things get "tricky", damaging and ordering new parts is usually the end result. I must admit that I am little disgruntled with the fact that I had everything unbolted and a simple rotation to the right prevented me from getting at those bearings.

I just did it on my 9R... I had Super on the bottom watching clearance and moving the ignition a bit and I was moving/pulling up on the triple...you just have to get the right angle... but you can't see that from above... I don't know what to tell you, it was a small step in the grand scheme of things and just made it through it... IT IS DO-ABLE!

So, I worked on the bike yesterday and was able to get the upper triple off. It took a little prying but came off without major pain. I tighten the bearings and took her out for a ride and what a difference .
