bike won't fire...

i went down to start up the bike today. i just put the battery back in it yesterday. it was on the trickle charger all winter long. now the bike won't fire. i am waiting for the father-in-law to come check it out, until then i thought i'd get advice from my gang here. all the lights come on and it sounds like it is gonna fire, but then it makes this horrible grinding sound coming from right around the battery area. what could it be? i put the battery back in myself this year, usually i have my husband do it (i am trying to be more self-sufficient this year). did i do something wrong? i hooked it up just like the book said, red +, black -. anyways, this puts a damper on any riding i wanted to do today. thanks for your help gang.

be sure you have all conditions correct to start.

Ie.. Kickstand Down if in gear, Clutch in if in gear, Key on as well as toggle, It wouldnt hurt to flip the toggle a couple times to ensure connection has been made from sitting. And also you may want to get a tester on the battery to see that the charge took and didnt burn or damage a cell. Good luck,

Did you miss any little wires at the battery? IDK about you bike but some have small ground wires and hot wires that have to be attached also.

Once you know everything is right... try to jump it off your car... the battery could have been on a trickle charger all winter and still be junk!

If the jump start works. Take the battery to the parts store or shop to get it tested.

well, my father in law did get it to fire up with the jumper cables. but once it stalled out it wouldn't restart. he measured the output with some fancy machine he has and told me that it officially took a puke. so my husband is off to the battery store to check on getting me a new one. so no riding for me today. maybe tomorrow...

Yeah I told ya... bad battery. Sometimes its not good to leave a bike on a trickle all winter. I know I never do. Just take it off the bike and put it on the trickle charger like a few weeks before wanting to get the bike out!

There's no greater feeling when a fix is fixed. There's no worse feeling when you're trying to ride and your bike is dead. At least you know what's wrong.

Yep

And that thingy that he put on the battery was most likely a "load tester" it will tell you if you need to go potty or not!

well, my hubby got me a new battery last night. it was on charge overnight. i am gonna put it in today and see how she runs. i think this winter i will not be leaving it on the trickle charger the whole time. who'd thought that could be a bad thing. but i am all set for now and should be back on 2 wheels here real soon. thanks for the support, gang!

You have to add the acid and then charge for 12 hours.

They have a dry test charge from manufacture. Its usually enough to get you going. Its just highly recommended to pre charge most MC batteries before install.
