New "old Suzuki"

I found a 1992 Suzuki GSX? Katana on local craigs list. 9,000 miles was a slight lay down needs a head light glass lens, mirrors, fronr turn signals. A lot of TLC But for a disabled vietnam vet with my budget $300 Bucks!! I started pulling it apart today got the air filter box off and going to clean the carbs (four) Wow This will be a good project for me. If any one has some cheap T/S and mirrors that will work let me know Ill change oil and filter and pull the plugs. any tips or suggestions are welcome Im taking the MSF class had my frist range day after not riding since 1976 boy am I rust but its comming back to me. will keep ya posted on my progress, This is my frist post I just joined this site I did a intro but I dont see it. Thanks #1 Moses

weird how they classify their bikes. How in the heck do they place a kantana in the same class with a gsxr?? the katana is to heavy to be a sportbike, sport tourer maybe

Back in the day, the Katana (GSXF) and the GSXR shared the same basic engine. Big differences were the frame and suspension, cams, carbs, etc....

Katana/GSXF

Not really sure what I have? Its 4Cylinder with fairings cast wheels, Oil cooler,Fuel gauge, It looks like the 1992 Katana on e-bay but some call theres a Gsx-- F I dont know but I like it. I just got my Kawasaki EX 500 running today had to repair the starter clutch, The hub broke loose from the gear a shop near me welded it for free and I used a dremmel to finish it. It runs great I will be riding it this week. I will put plates and insurance on this one.

The Kats (yes, the Designation GSX-F indicates the Katana) and the Gixxer did share the same motor through the mid 90's when Suzuki switched from air/oil cooled to water cooled on the Gixxer to keep ahead in the horsepower wars. The other differences today is steel frames for the Kats, alloy for the Gixxer, budget suspension for the Kat, state-of-the art for the Gix.

Yes, I like the Kats (I'll pick up an '03 750 this week) because they are great "real world" bikes....if I only could have one bike (fat chance), it would be a Katana. You can tour on them in relative comfort, commute, flail them around the backroads, and do well-nigh ALL periodic maint yourself....and they don't break unless SEVERELY abused or crashed REALLY hard. They give up some at the track in top speed, but I've got a couple of friends who track Kats with some suspension mods, and they regularly embarrass guys on pure sports bikes.

For those of you who are doubters, I'll gladly meet you up on rt 9 at Paw Paw WV next week for a demonstration....

Some folks just have more money than good sense.

tat last comment is foolish we all know its the rider not the bike in most cases. I know ppl who can embarrass 90% of us here riding a 250. I just never liked the katana, or the gixxer for that matter esp now with its frame issues. They look nice yes, they have the spec, but Honda beats em on the track regularly so they aint all that nor is any bike. : I'm sure its a fine bike for what it is. But it isnt a sportbike as some of the tards here acted like it was in its day.

Don't live there, but ride up in that neck of the woods as often as I can. I have a place up in Deep Creek that I get to a couple times per year, and I have a group of friends from the 'Burg I ride with a couple times per year. I drop you a holla next time I'm up ur way.

LOL I did some thing I dont know if screwed some thing up or not . I spun it over with out groundind out the spark leads! could I have burned some thing out? Any thoughts, ideas welcome. Thanks #1 Moses

Try Here http://groups.msn.com/KatanaOwnersGr...lia/links.msnw

I know a few guys racing Kats, and the Sydney Kat Owners club turned up at the Barry Sheene Memorial earlier this year. Someone there might be able to help out a bit more.

Just a note, In Australia, only a certain series of GSX's were ever called Katana's! Early 80's in particular. They'd still help out, though!

Good luck, and keep us posted

okay, i'll admit this. the reason my wife bought me a 750 gsxr was because some years earlier (after retiring from motorcycles/racing), she bought me a katana 600. she paid full asking price of $3700 on a used katana 600.

i rode it then sold it the following month for $2000. my previous huricane 600 was a better ride than that. katana's are slow, very weak power band, and it's lack of power makes the bike feel very heavy. the suspension, err, what suspension? it needed one.

My wife realized that i didn't appreciate the katana and surprised me with the gixxer for christmas.
