Shift Kit

Anybody install a Factory Pro shift kit www.factorypro.com? They make them for all makes of bikes. Motorcycle Consumer News installed one on a 1999 Yamaha YZF600R. It's one of the worst shifting 600's (along with the FZR400 and FZR600). It took 2 1/2 hours, not including the 30 bolts for the fairing lowers, and transformed the bike. The most important thing was to cover the holes leading into the sump so parts couldn't fall in.

Might also be a good time to replace the clutch plates. Need a special tool or impact wrench to take off the clutch nut. The kit is around $80, and even if you have a mechanic do the install, it should only cost about $100 in labor.

I've installed a couple...it all depends on how the bike is designed as to how easy or hard it is to install...the kit is just a heavier detent spring and a new gasket. Personally, I think the Factory shift kits are awesome and I highly recommend them. I had a ZX10 that I kept hitting neutral on the 1-2 shift if I didn't pull the lever hard enough, after installing the shift kit I never had another problem. The thing to remember is that it won't fix a bad transmission but it will fix sloppy shifting that can ruin a transmission.

I just posted the information so that anyone with an ill-shifting trans would know that something is available to fix it. Although that's deeper into the engine than I'd gone before.

And Larry G, I've hit neutral so many times on my CBR 1000F, I've almost given up stop-light racing. Almost, that is. It just turned 40,000, so maybe it's time to replace the clutch plates and install the shift kit. I'll just add that to the other things I want to do on it.

if your bike doesnt feel like a dragster on the clutch i'd add the shift kit... itll make the clutch last longer and give ya better launches and off the shift power.
Banshee ATV's are known for crappy clutches and a shift kit on them makes em feel ten times better.
I definalty want a shift kit for the Z1000, the bike is idle for under 100 accelaration, so why not make it even more potent there.

I think you are talking about clutch springs here and I agree that they really help clutch feel. However, the Factory shift kit replaces the detent spring that holds the shift drum at each gear position and is something completely different. The stiffer spring actually helps rotate the shift drum to the next position with more force to give a more positive engagement so you have less missed shifts.
