Taking rattle can off of clear coat and prepping for paint???

My bike use to look like this...

But my buddy sold the bike to a guy who did this...

He used normal semi-glossy spray paint and didn't bother taking off the clear coat. He even hit the windscreen.

Now my question is what all do I need to do to prep the body for paint?

Should I sand it past the black and into the clear coat down to the original paint? Or should I smooth out the black paint and just paint over that?

When it is repainted it will be done by a profesional painter but I have done body prep work before on cars. I'm just not sure about plastic and with paint being over a clearcoat.

What would you suggest the best coarse of action is?

I would def get it down to the real paint at least. Rattle can + real paint wont do to well.

I believe he was high on something.

I guess sand paper would be the best way to remove everything. I figured I'd start with 400grit(Or so) and take it down to the original. Then do body repair and then put the base coats and stuff.

I know a guy who is an awesome painter and he'll do it for me for probably cost of paint and $50 with me doing prep work and making it show bike quality work.

Nice way to destory a beautiful F3(?) with a rattle can!

I sold an F2 with 20K miles that was still in showroom condition a few years ago...the idiot painted it bright pink and put those colored Mohawk retreads on it with a fur seat. I want to cry.

Sweet paint paintguy. Which I don't want to stand out that much. And I'm not too far from Lithonia either. But for now I ran into a new problem with my bike so the paint will be on hold.

Now that I got the carbs synched up and new plugs the bike sort of falls on it's face underload(Driving). It happens more at low-mid RPMs. My buddy rode it who use to own it and said that even at low idle rpms(Aprx4000) under no load it wasn't running right. I'm going to change out the fuel filter tommorow and if that doesn't fix it then we are assuming it's the carbs.

Which when it's not underload it doesn't have a bad stall at all.

I am thinking of getting the "Smoking Joe" body kit. I've always thought that looked sweet and when I was first into bikes when I was 14 or so(Because my neighber had a F2) I looked at the CBR600 F3 Smoking Joe the same way people now look at CBR1000 Repsols. They just looked bad ass.

on the paint, I'd sand down to primer and just repaint the whole thing. there is NOTHING that will get the paint off your windscreen effectively and be worth the time or effort, I tried once, and actually made it worse. paint remover messes with the plastic, sand paper screws it up more, so yeah, buy a new windscreen and be done with it.

life is but a way of killing time until you die. why care how you live, just have fun while you can.

I started sanding last night for a few minutes just to see how I went.

I started with 400grit but was going pretty slow. Then I moved down to 320 and still slow. Finally I used 100grit and it worked great. It roughed up the plastic but then I hit the red with 400grit and it smoothed it out great.

Here are some pics...

I'll do some more sanding this week.

Paintguy, you should start a thread on how to do a rattlecan paint job and make it look decent.
