Anyone here have trouble getting bike inspected w/ a rear fender eliminator/undertail

For those of you with undertail kits, have any of you had a hard time getting a shop to pass your bike and give you an inspection sticker?

I had a local shop today say they wouldnt pass my bike because I didnt have a light on my license plate and my turn signals are too close together. They need to be 9" apart according to NY state rules.

Anyone have similar problems or is this guy just being a dick?

For the heck of it I asked him if it would be ok if I replaced my clear turn signals with smoke ones (I have GSX-R turn signal mirrors on my F4i) and he said no they have to be clear to pass. Any opinions on that?

Thanks guys
Jim

I hear it can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but I haven't gotten my R1 inspected yet, and I don't think I am going to since they stick the inspection stickers in the front forks behind the front fairing, The cops have to catch me first.

Yeah I've heard about people having issues with it... though mostly it seems to be up to the inspector... some are more... ANAL than others... sorry but if somone sees an amber light on the left side of your bike blink do you really think they're gonna go...uh... well it's not 9" from the other one... I wonder what he's gonna do

But the license plate light is mandatory everwhere... and that's something a cop WILL pull you over for... so get one... or you'll run the chance of getting pulled over and... re-inspected

as for the undertail... I know it's required by dot to have that stupid fender... otherwise bikes wouldn't have them... but I can't see you getting much flack for it... alot of sport bikes have them... I bet if you got a hugger you could get away with it... as I think the requirement is a rear fender... but don't quote me on that...

do you still have all your OEM stuff? if so just throw it back on (if you can) and get inspected... then remove it later

Interesting comment about the fender eliminator. Does a tire hugger qualify as a rear fender?

So far, I have been lucky in NC. Two inspections with fender eliminator, iridium flush mounts in the front, and integrated turn signals in the rear. The brake lamp setup illuminates the plate.

Now I am jinxed, for fessing up in public

I've got a killer guy who inspects my ride. As long as it HAS signals...beit smoked, clear, or otherwise; and has working lights, horn, solid sneakers and brakes...it's all good.

I don't have a chain guard...which is required in PA, along with small azz signals. No grief.

My would be to find another shop before you put OEM stuff back on...that would be a waste of time. Find a small private shop...not a dealer. They are usually a little more forgiving on aftermarket gear.

No inspections in Michigan thank god.

Carl made a good point... a tire hugger should pass... its not much different than any cruiser then. Just get one of those...it will save some stuff from hitting your undertail anyway.

Turns.... that just sucks...but is why the manufacture puts them on the stalks.

I suggest a different place... a decent guy should just tell you... "Hey I love that stock fender... "

I can't imagine why it wouldn't.... the cover about as much as a cruzer tire.... I personally would have asked the inspector... then change over and went to a diffrent guy... that's just me...

For future reference. Forget the dealer. Give them a swift and find an indy shop to make pals with.

i had the same questions last year when i went for my inspection. my father-in-law took my bike to one of his harley shops for inspection and they wouldn't do it without the rear fender (even though i had a tire hugger). whatever...so i went to another one of his HD connections and he passed me with no problems...and i gave him a nice tip to remember me by. it's such a headache, how do these chopper guys get passed? i think this year i am gonna put a big orange triangle on the back of my bike. would that work?

but seriously...a guy i graduated high school with has a bike business, i think i'll hit him up this year. maybe he'll let me slide.

Well I know my chopper came with all these stupid reflectors on it and everything... but I removed them and put my plate vertical...so I'm double bad now... oh well!

no wonder why they wouldnt pass you...lol

I stayed away from that setup when i got a fender eliminator.....mine still mounts to the factory location....

i can see cops getting pissed with a plate mounted all the way in like that...kinda hard to see...+ doesnt it get chewed up by the tire on bumps and debris???

I like that tail bro. You shouldn't have a problem getting it passed at an indy shop. Forget the dealers...they are nit-pickers. Any luck yet on the inspect?
