value 01 r1 20,000 miles?

Hey guys, I came across an 01 R1 with 20,000 miles fairly close to home.
It is a blue bike and has a slip on exhaust and flush mount signals.
He is asking $4500 for the bike, does that sound hi, low, or about right?
Anything particular to look for or watch out for on this model R1?
Trying to decide if I want a bike this old with this many miles or wait for another month or so and pick up an 03 or 04 model.
Thanks

to TWF if I haven't already said so.
Low Retail $4,515
Average Retail $5,940

Make sure the chain and sprockets are good. Clutch my be worn if it was rode hard. Brakes may be worn. Other wise nothing wrong with mileage. The rest should be obvious. Body damage, frame damage. If it has custom paint, ask why. Most bikes don't get painted till after a crash.

Thanks jeeps
It still has the stock factory paint on it.
I will see if I can make an appointment to see it next weekend.

I think it sounds like a good deal. Also ask if it has a steering stabilizer installed. Those bike desperately need one to keep the front in check.

One thing to be careful of is book values... Yeah it's a nice place to start, but the market does not always reflect what the NADA or Kelley's think...

A lot of times if you get a bike at book value, you much more than the actual market value for the given period of time... It goes the other way sometimes too... Sometimes you find people who don't know what they have, don't care and need the cash, or in some cases the market does not allow prices to reach NADA or Blue Book (Kelley's) rates...

The best thing to do is check the standard selling avenues... local papers, Cycle Trader, Waldecks, craigslist, etc... Find what you are looking for and get some baseline pricing for comparison...

Everything that Jeeps said is right on.

If you aren't a rider yourself or mechanically inclined. Take someone who is.
