2001 R1 for $6500?

I was on my way to work this morning and drove by a gorgeous looking red R1. On the way home I stopped to take a look. It's a 2001 model and is in great shape cosmeticly, except a small scratch on the right side fairing, looks like a tip over, not as if it were dropped from speed.

I got the phone numbers, and am thinking abotu giving them a ring. At least for the area, 6500 seems like a great deal, most 01's are hovering around 8-8.5.

I got annoyed with the R6, I'm pretty sure it was a lemon, too many weird tranny issues. So that mistake's been gone for a while. Riding season is all but over, but I figure I might get a better deal now that demand isn't there. So first, what is the concensus on these bikes? Anything to be aware of with these bikes?

I figure I should be able to knock him down to $5500 if I pretend that the scratch is a big deal, but I think given the local market for liter bikes, I'll probably go for it even at 6500. I miss my R6 and i just want another sport bike. Well, I don't miss THAT R6, but I loved the bike other than the issues with the tranny. Also figure the extra power at lower revs would be nicer for cruising around anyway.

So guys, whatcha think of these bikes?

I'd stay away from carburated bikes IMO. I hate carbs.

Pfffft, as a young guy, 20<, I grew up on carbed dirtbikes, my R6 was my first FI bike...and that didn't exactly leave me with a great impression.

Now my only concern with that would be is if it has 4 carbs... just 1 would be ok, but I'm not so comfortable with tryign to tune 4 of em, unless they have master controls.

They're usually all linked. But if one goes bad...you know the rest. You mentioned tranny problems on your R6. Was it a '02? The '02's were carbed as well.

My R6 was an 04, it had a problem with throttle responce, which was seperate from the problem with the gearbox. THe tranny was jsut really clunky. I found it very notchy and it just felt all wrong. First i thought I was doing something wrong, but my neighbor had the same bike and I loved it.

I'd really rather have an FI R1 but I just can't find one for what i can pay.

you better knock that guy down lower than that.
I paid $6500 for my 03 R1 which had 2k miles on it, and not a scratch. It was show room condition when I got it, and never once saw a drop of rain or weather below 55 degrees.

According to the NADA Guide for a 2001 R1 is:
Low Retail $4,330 / Average Retail $5,695

So offer that guy $5,000

Well if i could get it for 5000, or even 5500, that would really lower the payments, I'd still have to get a 12 month loan on it, but it would make a pretty cheap and fun toy. Even looking at it for the winter would keep me fired up

At 20, with a clean record, any rough guesses as to insurance payments? DOes being a few years old lower the payments maybe? I know they vary all over the place, but any rough guess would help.

Any insurance on a 1000cc, and any R1 is not going to be cheap especially with full coverage. Mine was $705 a year w/ a clear driving record, MSF discount, and I was at age 24.
I don't know how much it's going to cost me for liability coverage, and now that I'm 25. I guess I'll find out when I switch the policy over.

good chance it mite have some probs, a friend was selling his '00 R1, for 5gz, only prob, 2nd gear is F*&%KT. early ones had weak trannies. Price seems shady, maybe look for a 03, shouldnt be that big of a price diff. Nothing wrong with carbs tho Im lookin for a 01 Champions Edition for next season.

Well guys, the deal gets worse, upon actually looking real close, I checked the sticker on the fork and it's a 99. That and i got some bad news about moms job, so since I'm going to help her out a lot more, I don't knwo if I can swing it before spring. If I can get him down to $4500 I might take it anyway, if things get sorted out.
