The Suzuki engine is already an absolute wonder. Smooth, powerful and the strongest bottom end pull of all the litre class sportsbikes. It has taken the others a few years to be able to challenge the might of the Suzuki engine but thankfully we haven't had to wait too long for their answer.

Previous and current incarnations of the GSX-R1000 displace 988cc. For 2005 the cylinder bore has grown slightly to produce a full 999cc.

Filling the marginally larger cylinders are bigger 44mm throttle bodies. Another thing to grow are the disc rotors, now up to 310mm.

The rake is slightly reduced along with the wheelbase. The K5 machine is also lower, thinner and shorter overall. The seat height is also significantly lower.

Dry weight is down 2kg to a claimed 166kg dry.

Specifications (Subject to late changes) - 2005 Suzuki GSX-R1000 K5

Bore × stroke - 73.4 mm × 59 mm

Displacement - 999 cc

Induction - Fuel injection 44 mm throttle bodies

Rake/trail - 23.8 degrees / 96 mm

Suspension Front - Inverted telescopic, coil spring, spring pre-load fully adjustable, rebound and compression damping force fully adjustable

Suspension Rear - Link type, oil damped, coil spring, spring pre-load fully adjustable, rebound and compression damping force fully adjustable

Brakes Front - Radial mount, 4-piston calipers, 2 x 310 mm discs

Brake Rear - Two piston caliper, 220 mm disc

Tyres Front - 120/70 ZR17

Tyres Rear - 190/50 ZR17

Fuel tank - 18 L

Overall length - 2,030 mm

Overall width - 710 mm

Overall height - 1,130 mm

Wheelbase - 1,405 mm

Seat height - 810 mm

Dry weight - 166kg

I think that exhaust looks pretty sweet for a stock can. Those blinkers are OK, but not my first choice...reminds me of the Honda XX's...

The binkers are... eh. They belong more on a sport tourer, but I like the effort to do something other than 12" stalks that stick out.

The can is horrendous. I don't care if it says "Platinum"... it's not scaled for the bike properly. That's okay though, that's usually the first thing to go. :)

Again, with the can and the blinkers. At least they're trying something new. That's why I'm down. Like Shan said, the blinkers, in this case and mirrors, and the can are usually one of the first to go anyway...

OK, my turn with the the can/blinkers thing..the rear blinkers are sweet, definately like those..but the front ones, on the mirrors? No thank..just flush mount em on the front, same as the back and they'd be kick a$$. I like how the color scheme isnt quite as loud as previous years..the plastic is just a basic sleek cool design, not real choppy with the all the blues/whites.

They get an A for effort in the can, atleast trying something new..but an F for design, Yuck!!

That's kinda what I thought, suit a big goldwing or a BMW, not a sports bike

Be better if they were flush like the euro/jap/aussie zx10r



Not sure why the USA did get those instead of the stalks.....

The other thing about them though, is the fact that they are not flush with the mirrors, make them look tacked on.

Looking at this more, it's still very much a Gixxer, but the body work is much more like a Yamaha (think R1)

I can see the R1 styling you mention. WOW, if they had those 10R blinkers in the front and the current rears they show, HOW MUCH WOULD THAT ROCK???

what I honestly cant figure out, is why, on any sportsbike, do they continually manufacture them without flush mount blinkers on both the front and back. Is that they feel the stalks are just more visible ?..or what?

I mean, they look better and it totally screws up the flow of the bike when you have these plastic little sticks out each side of the bike. :rolleyes:

It must have something to do with DOT regulations that OEM's are held to.

WHen I saw it and looked at the seat and angles around there it made me think of the R1

I like the rear blinkers. Dis-like the front and DO NOT LIKE THE CAN. Thats my thoughts on it. But I do like the black frame. :)

I saw one of those the other day...the bike itself didn't look bad at all, but I don't really like the S on the tank, I liked it better when they actually spelling suzuki out

zuki is doing that as well, with the Kats, and I believe many of their other bikes too.
