NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police are investigating a motorcycle accident that killed one man and injured another.
The victims' names have not been released.
The accident occurred just before 4 a.m. on the South Claiborne Avenue overpass near Erato Street.
According to investigators, the two men were speeding westbound off the overpass on a late-model yellow Honda CBR motorcycle with Georgia plates when the driver lost control. The motorcycle veered onto the median and struck a concrete light standard, ejecting one rider.
The motorcycle then continued toward Martin Luther King Boulevard and struck a traffic light pole, ejecting the second rider and coming to rest in a nearby supermarket parking lot.
No other people or vehicles were involved in the accident.
The first ejected rider was pronounced dead at the scene. The second rider was transported to the Medical Center of Louisiana and is listed in critical condition.
Fatality investigator Ross Bourgeois is trying to determine which man was driving and whether either rider was wearing a helmet.
