COLUMBUS, Ohio -- At least 11 people were being treated after a tank leaked hazardous chemicals on the Ohio State campus Tuesday morning.
A hazardous materials team was dispatched to the McCracken power plant, located at 304 W. 17th Avenue at about 10:15 a.m.
The tank, which contained sodium hypochlorite, was mixed with sulfite, causing the problem and released fumes into all four floors of the building, NBC 4's Duarte Geraldino reported.
The extent of the injuries was not known. Two of those treated were firefighters. Several of those affected complained of itchy throats and skin irritations.
People also were evacuated from Larkins Hall and from part of a new gymnasium, Geraldino reported.
The leak had not been contained as of noon, Geraldino reported.
The power plant was shut down and all energy needs were diverted to another source, Geraldino reported.
