First, I typically don't get into the "recommended first bikes" debate as I do feel you ride whatever you want. It's your decision. I have given my two cents too friends who actually considered buying Hyabusa's.
Secondly, I started on a 600cc bike (95 ZX-6E) last year. It costs me 1800 and honestly, I didn't like any of the "beginner bikes". I am in no endorsing to do as I did. I have since moved up to an 03 7R this season and my wife rides the E. I have approximately 10K miles riding experience total between last season and this past season.
I do want to reiterate that starting out, be it whatever cc, will take more than just refraining from being an idiot (implying throttle control). I think your success to riding will come down to how you react to all the different circumstances you'll encounter. For example, the first time you hit a bump in the road and your right hand cracks the throttle more and throws you back while seated. I did it and it was very unnerving, extreme pucker factor. Furthermore, the first time you lock up the front wheel braking due to cars immediately stopping ahead of you and you not realizing it until the last minute. I did that to.
My only "getoff" (too date) was the result of an improperly executed u-turn into a curb the very first day I took the 6E out. I didn't look all the way through the turn, target fixated on the curb, did not trust the bike while not upright (vertical), and had no concept of countersteering/turning the forks simultaneously. As a newbie, these are just a few things you'll most certainly encounter in your first season of street riding. I suggest you take the MSF beginners course and take it slow. Good luck with whatever you decide to ride.
