I have a buddy that has been struggling with a driveability problem on his R1. He finally had got the Yamaha district rep to look at it this week, and I came to the conclusion that he is an idiot, knows nothing about sportbikes.

At 3000 rpm, the engine RPM is not consistent, it surges +/- 500 RPM. At 7000-8000 RPM the bike sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders. My guess was coils. The rep, says there is nothing wrong with it, and after riding, suggested adjusting the chain. His claim is that is how a high horsepower bikes run.

Anyone out there encountered a R1 that runs like crap? I wont even get on his bike, since it runs so bad. :bash:

Have someone else check the coils. That's what it sounds like to me.

That sounds bad... but I haven't heard anything on it....

Make sure the plug wires are firmly in place. The wires tight on the Battery and coils. Its not likely for a coil to go bad and the bike still run on all four some times.

The R6's and R1's seem to be having a problem with their Throttle Position Sensor. Have this checked out. (You can also go into the National Hwy Traffic Safety website and find over 20 complaints about this in their site.)

Especially if it has been tampered with or changed as a go-fast goodie.
