I'm :skep:

WABASHA, Minn. -- With a State Patrol airplane overhead, a Stillwater motorcyclist hit the throttle and possibly set the informal record for the fastest speeding ticket in Minnesota history: 205 mph.

On Saturday afternoon, State Patrol pilot Al Loney was flying near Wabasha, in southeastern Minnesota on the Wisconsin border, watching two motorcyclists racing along U.S. Highway 61.

When one of the riders shot forward, Loney was ready with his stopwatch. He clicked it once when the motorcycle reached a white marker on the road and again a quarter-mile later. The watch read 4.39 seconds, which Loney calculated to be 205 mph.

``I was in total disbelief,'' Loney told the St. Paul Pioneer Press for today's editions. ``I had to double-check my watch because in 27 years I'd never seen anything move that fast.''

Several law enforcement sources told the newspaper that, although no official records are kept, it was probably the fastest ticket ever written in the state.

After about three-quarters of a mile, the biker slowed to about 100 mph and let the other cycle catch up. By then Loney had radioed ahead to another state trooper, who pulled the two over soon afterward.

The State Patrol officer arrested the faster rider, 20-year-old Stillwater resident Samuel Armstrong Tilley, for reckless driving, driving without a motorcycle license - and driving 140 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 65 mph.

A search of speeding tickets written by state troopers, who patrol most of the state's highways, between 1990 and February 2004 shows the next fastest ticket was for 150 mph in 1994 in Lake of the Woods County.

Tilley did not return calls from the newspaper to his home Monday. A working number for him could not immediately be found by The Associated Press today.

Only a handful of exotic sports cars can reach 200 mph, but many high-performance motorcycles can top 175 mph. With minor modifications, they can hit 200 mph. Tilley was riding a Honda 1000, Loney said.

Kathy Swanson of the state Office of Traffic Safety said unless Tilley was wearing the kind of protective gear professional motorcycle racers wear, he was courting death at 200 mph.

``I'm not entirely sure what would happen if you crashed at 200 miles per hour,'' Swanson said. ``But it wouldn't be pretty, that's for sure.''

@ $50 for the first 10mph over the posted speed limit of 65 and $10 for every mph over that, his ticket must have been around $1,300. Tha'ts a months rent for me.

Shan, me too. No question the guy was hauling serious ass, but this wouldn't be the first time I've read an article where the officer exaggerated a bit. I remember and article a couple years ago where an officer said he chased down a car that was doing 180mph. lol

The culprit speaks..

Here's his response, (from SBN)

205mph

All right, I was the one who got the ticket and it is time to clear some things up. For one, I was riding a 2003 Honda RC51, "heavily modified" with 2 Brothers slip on pipes and, well thats all the mods I have unless you count the "I stop for wh***s" sticker. Next, the bike wasn't impounded, it was towed so it wouldn't be in the roadway. Ok, on to the tickets. 205...uh no. I am personal friends with the owner of "Hitman Motorsports" and tonight, Sept. 22, we did a top speed run on his dyno, in 6th gear, and maxed nearly 60mph slower than I was arrested for. The "no motorcycle endorsement" is because my licence was expired, I do have a motorcycle endoresement for all you people digging into me about that. The stop watch method may be accurate at times, but this is un-conceivable for my motorcycle to approach 205. Honda's RC211v, which is Honda's MotoGP race bike, 5 cyclinders and 268 horespower, just broke 200mph on the track within the last week. And we are talking about a 1/2 to 3/4 million dollar bike. And for you gear-heads, I had on Joe Rocket Boots, Shoei helmet, Leather gloves, Ballistic coat, and leather bottoms. Also, both of us were arrested, and no, the slower one did not get a warning, he was ticketed for 111mph on a F4i. I hope this clears things up for everybody, I am just sick of everyone saying things about what they dont know, making me look like this horrific person. People speed, and if anyone knows anything about the "Flood Run" (which was the ride I was on, which by the way benefits the Gillettes Children Fund) I would be a hell of a lot more concerned about the 7,000 bar-hopping motorcyclist out on the road. 99% of the people you hear things from are misinformed. If you have questions, I will answer them. And one last note, this is information you don't know, the pilot who clocked me, was clocking me, the F4i, and flying his plane at 110mph all at the same time. Think about that for a second.

all we can do is take his word for it, and we have no reason not too really atleast as far as I can tell, since we all werent there....

Hey, he was out having some fun, and got just plain got caught speeding..hey, happens to everybody at some point!! I would definately fight the ticket and at the very least, get the penalty reduced since it appears, that he's got the proof to back up the 205mph false claim. And yeah it better be heavily modded to get anywhere near 205mph in the first place. Now I dont condone going that fast on any public road, not at all..but if you're gonna do it, atleast do it on as much of a non-high traffic road as you can.

I can say I'd be upset too if everybody was raggin on me all over the internet, so give him props for trying to explain/clear his name.

I believe him. I'm not a person that hates cops, but I think it's fair to say they do more than their share of exaggerating "facts."

Most of us on here have gone as fast as he's claiming he went and we choose those roads carefully. (at least I hope)

Why don't you ever hear about all the people getting hammered at bike nights and then cruising around on their hogs?

i hate the things some cops do. One did a break test on me the other day. F them. anyway, guy seems to be making sence to me. he should fight it till its dropped. a cop being wrong or lieing means it should be dropped.

I beleive him on this one. It is pretty hard to get a RC51 to move that fast. And I don't think he has that kind of money to put into the bike to get it to go that fast. So if I were him I would fight the ticket as well.

3 yrs ago I got pulled over for speeding by 2 State Troopers on the highway. It wasn't busy on the road and a nice long and clear straight away. So me being on my bike and doing what just about any other one of us would do, I hit it and went. As I neared the next exit I saw the top of the trooper car and rolled off the throtle right away and looked down. At this point it was reading 125mph and I knew I was in for a lot of trouble.

I didn't even want to think about saying the hell with it and go. I knew they wouldn't catch me, but I would be caught somewhere for it down the road. Pulling over right away and turning off the bike I waited for them to approach me. Getting my insurance card and license out for them and ready they came up to me with smiles. Seeing this worried me. I didn't know what to think at this point. All in all after talking to the cops and getting a ticket still for it, it was only written up for a 90 in a 65. So that made it a little bit better but I still lost my license for 90 days for it and got 4 points. That sucked.

The nice thing of it was that they were pretty cool with me about the whole thing. I think it might of had something to do with me pulling over right away and not having them chase me at all. At the end of it they told me I wasn't to ride it that day but they were going up the road and after they left, they had no control over what I did and if I rode it. They also let me know that they were getting off the next exit ahd going to other way. Hint hint.

So this comes to show not all cops out there are donut eating pricks. Some are really donut eating nice guys. The best ones are the ones that ride as well and that really comes in handy when you get pulled over. :D
