I am trying to put a 98 gsxr600 engine on a dune buggy that I have made and am having trouble with the electrical. The engine turns over and everything seems to be working correctly accept the spark plugs will not spark. I followed the service manual to try to find the problem and the only thing that did not read the correct voltage was the signal generator. This doesnt seem right though because the coils at the spark plugs are reading occasional 100volt values when the engine is cranking which is correct. I am using a 6 pole toggle switch instead of the normal keyed ignition switch because of a cost savings but could that be causeing the problem even though it turns everything on and the engine turns over? Does anybody have any ideas because I dont want to buy a new signal generator and have that not be the problem when they cost $130. Thanks for any help. If I knew how to I would post some pics!

Joe...you are not the first person to have this problem posted on TWF. I believe that you should be able to search for carts or somin and find those old threads...

But you would be surprised how many times it is the lack of ignition that causes these problems. I believe it was said that the ignition puts out a certain ohm or voltage when on and if that's not right then it's a no go!

On my CBR, the signal generator is called a pulse generator. It is on the left crank. When mine went out, it still sparked, but there was no advance. Using a timing light, the timing mark stayed at the T (top dead center) mark. To test my generator, the resistance between the connector terminals is 460-580 ohms at 68 degrees F.

I would check the ignition switch, and all the safety switches (kick stand, clutch lever, tip-over, emergency stop, etc.).

Besides the fact that some systems need to see a specific resistance from the ignition switch, there are a bunch of safety circuits that you will need to bypass as well.

Exactly, Did the bike that it came off have a kickstand Neutral safty. If so it needs to be bypassed. Also you have an ignition at the key terminal. you also would have a thumb toggle at the throttle side did you jump it out. As stated there are a lot of safety Ideas that certainly could be in play and you would need an "OWNERS" manual to show the safty features of the Bike this motor came off of.
This is all just a thought. For the record, Do you know the motor ran before you started this project?
Anyhow, All in all it sounds like an awesome project.
